NEPAL: Tibetan anti-China protest in Nepal
A Tibetan protestor is being chased by Nepalese riot police in front of the Chinese embassy in Kathmandu. A large group of Tibetan exiles living in Nepal is determined to keep on protesting despite brutal police intervention leaving dozens of Tibetan demonstrators injured. The Nepalese government supports a one-China policy - which puts Tibet as an integral part of China - any protest criticizing Nepalis powerful neighbor is outlawed. The use of excessive police violence to break non-violent Tibetan demonstrations has been condemned by various human rights bodies; even the UN has expressed serious concerns about the displayed brutality by Nepalese riot police at its doorstep and urged Nepalese authorities to guarantee the Tibetan protestors the right of freedom of speech. There are nearly 20,000 Tibetan refugees legally living in various parts of Nepal. According to Human Rights Watch as many as 3,000 Tibetans risk their lives annually, coming over the Himalayas entering Nepal on their way to Dharamsala, India, residence of Tibetan leader in exile the Dalai Lama.
