Children of Africa Portrait Series
ooking back I have often wondered what it was that made such a strong impression on me the first time I visited Africa as a tourist at the age of 17. ?Without a doubt the single most powerful memory is that of African children. Radiating and beaming with smiles and energy and shouting out the universal greeting of 'How are You?!' in an almost chant-like manner. I felt an emerging passion that would see me re-visit the Continent again and again in my work until eventually moving first to Kenya and now to South Africa. ?Little did I know back then that over a decade later I would of had the honour to work so closely with them, with a variety of high-profile charities and NGO's. This is a small cross-section of that work and a tribute to their courage and to their blissful happiness often in the face of such harsh adversity.
I have been careful with each picture not to appeal to a sense of pity towards the subjects, something which of course has been overdone and meets these days with an unreceptive audience.Ê I have tried to make the series visually informative about the environment of each child and dynamic and colour-rich.Ê There is also a subtle element of the surreal which in my opinion helps to highlight the unbelievable energy and happiness in the face of hardship which many in the modern Western world find hard to comprehend.Ê I hope to bring a smile to the viewers face but at the same time always convey in each portrait a sense of the compassionate.

Child soldiers of the Lord Resistance Army
August 1, 2006, Garamba, Sudan: LRA's teenagers soldiers. The cult-like LRA and its leader Joseph Kony are accused of killing civilians and mutilating its victims in a war against the Ugandan government that has uprooted nearly 2 million people and killed tens of thousands, as well as destabilising southern Sudan. At his press conference, Kony called for a truce and denied committing atrocities in northern Uganda and southern Sudan. "Those words people say to me, that is propaganda because they spoil my name like that ... so that people do not love me as a human being," he told reporters in halting English. Asked whether he would ever stand trial at the ICC, he said: "No, no, no... because I did not do anything." (Stephane Lehr/Polaris) ///

Chelsea pensioners .
NEW BOY OF THE PENSIONERS
The Royal Hospital Chelsea, founded by King Charles II in 1862 “as a retreat for veterans of the regular army who had become unfit for duty, either after 20 years’ service or as a result of wounds”. Although there are no barracks, a certain amount of kindly discipline is maintained – a fact which these old soldiers actually appreciate. At present there are 367 Chelsea Pensioners, presided over by General Sir Cameron Nicholson, and new recruits give up their outside pension on entering the Hospital. In return he is provided with his board and accommodation, clothing, a pint of beer daily or tobacco in lieu. They purchase the summer red uniform for £15 and are expected to perform a few light duties, but the majority of the time is their own. The Hospital has much to offer with companionship high on the list. For the remainder of their days the old soldier has a place of comfort and friends with whom he can swap stories of campaigns. What more could a veteran ask for?

MYSERY MAN SEEKS IDENTITY - FLOWN FROM PARIS
' Jimmy ' ( he knows no other name ) - the lost memory Englishman found wandering in the Bois de Boulogne , Paris , six days ago , was flown to England in a last hope of restoring his identity . He will be treated at a London hospital.
Officials of the American Hospital, Paris, where he was treated described him as ' positively the epitome of the British public school type'. They established he was suffering from amnesia, but could discover no more than that he was English. ' Jimmy', when found, was expensively dressed, but his clothes had no name tags or makers' labels. Solitaire clue of his identity is a number stamped inside his shoes. When found, ' Jimmy' had a bruise on his head, but doctors could not say whether he had been attacked.
PICTURE SHOWS;- Deep in thought as though trying to recall familiar scenes', ' Jimmy '- the lost memory man -arrived at Northolt airport, Middlesex today.

Girls who reach the leaving age at the Hammersmith Technical School for Women are well qualified to take up a career, or become a model housewife. They take a three years course there, starting when they are 13, and apart from general education and art, which is compulsory, they are allowed to choose one subject in which to specialise - including cookery, ladies tailoring, millinery, embroidery, and housewifery.
Seen here young pupils of the millinery class making hats at the school. At the end of their course the girls are highly proficient, and can start work in the trade at a good wage.
