These haunting photographs show the remnants of the once all-powerful Soviet empire.

They are the work of Eric Lusito, who spent six years travelling throughout the former Soviet world from East Germany to Mongolia, from Poland to Kazakhstan to seek out remains of the military installations that embodied the ambition and the might of the USSR.

Describing himself as working like an archaeologist, the French photographer says his project "Traces of the Soviet Empire" is a photographic record of the land and architecture - haunted by the symbols and history of a once powerful Empire.

The on-going project takes the form of three series: exteriors, interiors, and found photographs "images from another time, another space and another world".

What he found was colourful propaganda wall art, faded frescos of Lenin, discarded gas masks, and huge monuments, including those in the shapes of a soldier and a sword.

William*, a 5 year old boy, being treated for cholera a primary health care unit in Torit County by Save the Children and County Health Department staff.
Afisha moves slowly and deliberately between her two children, William and Sarah, who are being treated at a primary health care centre (PHCC) in Torit County, Eastern Equatoria State, South Sudan. Afisha seems worn out, but is obviously still concerned about her children and is constantly moving between the pair and vigilantly monitoring them both.
The PHCC has been open in Hiyala, a rural village in Torit County, for several years. Afisha lives about an hourâs walk from the centre, and when her two children fell ill she immediately set off on foot with her 3 year old and 5 year old in tow. Her elderly mother also walked with them down the dusty, uneven road. It was the middle of the night.
Afishaâs experience is not uncommon in South Sudan at the moment, as more and more cases of cholera are being reported throughout the country at an increasingly alarming rate. This was also not Afishaâs only experience of this deadly disease. Afisha had four children, however tragedy struck when her four year old, and her two year old contracted an illness symptomatic of cholera. Unfortunately Afisha was not able to get treatment for her two children who sadly passed away due to the disease.
The times are changing for Afisha and her family, and many other families in the area. Illness is a constant. Given the lack of access to sanitary conditions or clean water, it is not surprising that areas like this are rife with diseases such as cholera. However, with the PHCC within walking distance for ...

Peru now exports more illegally-produced gold than it does cocaine and Peru is one of the world's largest gold exporters.

Though there are many who profit from this gold rush, there is a population of women that are slaves to the process, known as the Daughters of Awichita.

Peruvian photographer Omar Lucas has captured a series of thought-provoking images of the women working in the gold mines.

The photos were taken in La Rinconada, a place that is five hours away from Lake Titicaca, where there is a population of about 70,000 people who live on the gold they extract from the edges of a snowy mountain.

'Free Willy' Trainer To Release Captive Dolphins
Following a dramatic rescue and nearly two years of rehabilitation these bottleneck dolphins have been declared ready for release.

Tom and Misha were rescued by international wildlife charity, Born Free after spending six years in a small, filthy pool in Hisaronu, Turkey.

Marine mammal expert, Jeff Foster and his team have spent 20 months of painstaking rehabilitation to increase the dolphin's levels of fitness and revert them back to a diet of live fish.

The dolphins are now fit and healthy and hunting their own food.

Jeff said: "You can sense that Tom and Misha are ready to go. Our work in preparing them for the chance of life back in the ocean has reached its conclusion.

"When the dolphin's sea pen is finally unzipped they'll be free to leave. I hope they will swim off and don't look back."

Having worked with marine mammals for over four decades, including the rehabilitation of Keiko, the orca star of the film 'Free Willy', Jeff believes that Tom and Misha's journey to freedom could provide a replicable pathway for more dolphins in the future.

In Turkey to help with final preparations for the release, Programme Director for the Born Free Foundation said: "This has been a long journey for all involved. Waving Tom and Misha off will be a high point in my 20 years working for animals."

When asked for the official date of the dolphins release Born Free's spokesperson, Kate Chapman said: "I'm afraid we don't have a definitive date for the release of the dolphins as the project is top secret, but it is imminent."

Tom and Misha will have satellite tags fitted at the time of their release and their progress will be tracked by the Rehabilitation team.

Tom and Misha in swimming pool - dolphins in rehabilitation after being kept in captivity for years.
Leap Of Faith: Dolphins To Be Released Back Into Wild After Years Of Captivity
These two bottleneck dolphins look ready to leap back into the wild as they prepare for a new life in the ocean after years of captivity.

Tom and Misha were rescued from the brink of death in September 2010 and are now entering their final but crucial stages of rehabilitation.

The dolphins are on schedule for release back into the Aegean Sea in late spring.

Born Free and the Turkish NGO Underwater Research Society rescued Tom and Misha from a squalid pool in the tourist town of Hisaronu (South West Turkey) after a major campaign against their incarceration in the summer of 2010.

During their long period in captivity, Tom and Misha lost the ability to catch and eat live fish. They had become so reliant on their keepers that when they first came to the rehabilitation centre they refused to eat fish unless it was put directly into their mouths. But after months of expert husbandry and conditioning, Tom and Misha are once again catching and eating live fish.

The dedicated international rehabilitation team, headed by US cetacean expert, Jeff Foster, who worked on the rehabilitation and release programmes for the orcas (killer whales) Keiko and Springer.

Some of the techniques adopted by the team were first tested during the rehabilitation of the orca Keiko; star of the Hollywood hit 'Free Willy'.

Jeff recalled: "We 'cut our teeth' on Keiko, which was a hugely expensive and ambitious project. We learned from that experience and this enabled us to go on and successfully release Springer, another orca."

He added: "Tom and Misha are different again, not only because they are a different species but because they have spent ye...

Predator-like sculptures are residing at the David Marshall Lodge in Scotland.

The life-sized 'invisible' figures have been dubbed the predator effect after the 1987 film where an alien life form seamlessly blends into its surroundings.

Contemporary artist Rob Mulholland designed the series of six mirrored figures that are camouflaged amongst the Scottish woodlands; the sculptures are shaped from silhouettes of people he knows.

Because of their reflective surface the chameleon-like figures can just about be distinguished from their surroundings.

Mr Mulholland made the figures with mirrored stainless steel and has designed similar installations for the forest trail around Loch Ard and in Alloa.

The 51-year-old said: "The idea behind the installations was to convey the changes that have occurred in the landscape over the last few hundred years.

"These large forests were planted after the First World War as there was a massive shortage of timber nation-wide and the crofters and small hill farming communities were re-located by the government. I wanted to create a vestige of the people who once occupied and lived in this space.

"You can, even now, see the faint remains of their houses and stone walls in the undergrowth of the woods. For me it was both intriguing and poignant to think of...

United In Death: Skeleton Couple Buried Holding Hands
The skeletal remains of a Roman-era couple reveal the pair has been holding hands for 1,500 years.

Archaeologists renovating a palace in Italy found the skeleton pair of lovers buried in a final embrace.

The man and woman were likely to have been buried facing each other during the 5th and 6th century A.D. and were excavated from a joint tomb inside the palace walls in Modena, central northern Italy.

Archaeologist Donato Labate, the director of the excavation at the archaeological superintendence of Emilia-Romagna said: "We believe that the couple were originally buried with their eyes staring into one another's.

"I have been involved in many digs but I've never felt so moved."

The tender discovery was excavated by archaeologist Licia Diamanti during ordinary construction work in Modena. The skeleton couple belonged to the 11-tomb necropolis.

Archeologists believe the couple were not particularly rich due to the simple nature of the tombs they were buried in and think they may have lived on a farm.

They have also reported that a double grave is extremely rare to find, especially with the clear intent to translate beyond death a close emotional relationship. In this case - the two lovers holding hands.

The archeological dig revealed three layers of scientific interest. The couple were found on the middle layer among a total of 11 burials at a depth of about 10 feet.

It is thought the man's head would have been looking at the woman's when they were buried but the area they were buried in was subject to several floods from the River Tiepido, which may have caused the man's skull to roll away from his female companion.
