    Auction at Christie’s
    July 1954
Despite currency restrictions and other irritations of the post-war world, London is still the centre of the art market, and Christie’s is the great focus of that market in London. This is the first set of photographs taken since Christie’s returned to their premises in King Street after German bombs completed gutted the building in 1941, leaving nothing but a shell. This particular auction of furniture, rugs, porcelain and objects of art fetched £22,479 and 9 shillings.
Photo shows: Looking down on the Great Auction Room at Christie’s. The proceedings are very English in their lack of obvious animation.
