Young back packers at riverside bars. The main activity in Vang Vieng is tubing. This involves renting a large inner tube from locals, travelling 4km up the Nam Song river by vehicle, and then 'tubing' back down river. Dozens of bars line the river banks with booming music and lots of hedonistic backpackers getting drunk and/or high. Many rope swings, zip lines, and large decks have been built for socialising and splashing into the river.

THE DISUSED ELEVATED RAIL TRACK SET TO BECOME NEW YORK'S PRETTIEST PARK

A disused railway track looks set to become one of the prettiest parks in New York.

The High Line in west Chelsea is being converted into a park including floating ponds, sundecks and lookout spots over the Hudson River and Manhattan.

The elevated former industrial line had become decrepit and overgrown but thanks to the support of wealthy benefactors and several famous names it is undergoing a transformation into an amazing green space.

With the first phase set to open to the public later this month (June), the park should span 22 blocks once it's all open in 2010.

Stretching 1.45 miles, up to 30ft high and only 60ft wide, the line runs along Manhattan's West Side, from Gansevoort Street, in the Meatpacking District, through Chelsea to 34th Street.

Having last carried freight in 1980, it was saved from demolition by former mayor Michael Bloomberg and has seen high-profile support from the likes of Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Susan Sarandon, Harvey Weinstein and Jerry Seinfeld.

With $50m needed to complete the project, a recent star-studded fundraising gala saw individuals donations of $10m each from media mogul Barry Diller, whose corporate headquarters overlooks the elevated tracks, and billionaire hedge-fund manager Philip ...

Camera-Shy Hippo Makes a Dash For It

CAMERA-SHY HIPPO MAKES A DASH FOR IT

Despite being one of the larger members of the animal kingdom, hippos can be shy creatures.

So when photographer David Hobcote spotted this fellow enjoying a dip he was eager to snap a few shots.

But as he carefully paddled his boat closer to his subject in the Shire River in Malawi's Liwonde National Park, the hippopotamus got a bit camera shy.

At first the startled mammal tried to submerge underwater - where hippos can hold their breath for six minutes - but soon realised the marshy water wasn't deep enough.

So with a speed surprising for something so large he turned tail and made a dash for a quiet stretch of the river.

David explains: "Hippos are quite hard to photograph as, despite their size, they are quite shy and spend most of their time in daylight hours in the water. When approached they just submerge themselves and can stay under water for several minutes.
