Pope Francis has explained his decision to allow priests to bless same-sex couples.

He was speaking in the first ever interview given by a pontiff to a US TV channel.

The 87-year-old head of the catholic church , speaking to CBS news programme 60 Minute, said: “ What I allowed was not to bless the
    union.

“That cannot be done. Because that is not the sacrament. I cannot .

“The Lord made it that way.

“But to bless each person , yes the blessing is for everyone.

“To bless a homosexual type union however goes against the given right, the law of the Church.

“But to bless each person ? Why not ?

    “The blessing is for all.”

Author Salman Rushdie has given his first TV interview since losing an eye to an attacker at a public event.

And the 76-year-old revealed they surgeon who treated him said he was lucky because the assailant did not know how to use a knife properly.

Otherwise he would now be dead.

The Indian-born British-American had a fatwa issued against him in 1989 by Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini.

It was over Rushdie’s fourth novel The Satanic Verses, condemned by some muslim leaders as blasphemous to the prophet Muhammed.

A bounty was offered to anyone who would execute him forcing him to go into hiding.

In August 2022 he was attacked at a literary festival in Chautauqua, New York

He had been scheduled to give a speech about the United States being a refuge for exiled artists.

Rushdie faced a long recovery and ultimately lost his right eye and has some nerve damage to his face.

A second trailer has been released for self-exiled British Royal Prince Harry’s sit down interview with US TV presenter Anderson Cooper.
The 38-year-old Duke of Sussex is asked why he has not communicated his grievances against the Royal Family in private rather than going public.
Harry replies: “Every single time I've tried to do it privately there have been briefings and leakings and planting of stories against me and my wife.
“The family motto is never complain and never explain – it's just a motto.”
Harry, referring to Buckingham Palace , added:” They will feed or have a conversation with a correspondent, and that correspondent will literally be spoon-fed information and write the story, and at the bottom of it, they will say they have reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment.
“But the whole story is Buckingham Palace commenting.
“So when we're being told for the last six years, ‘'we can't put a statement out to protect you’, but you do it for other members of the family, there becomes a point when silence is betrayal.”
The chat was for CBS News and its 60 Minutes programme and was filmed at a rented property close to Harry and 41-year-old wife Meghan Markle’s home in Montecito, California.
The interview is due to air on Sunday January 8, two days before the book, titled Spare, is released on January 10.
The interview comes after Harry claimed in his Netflix documentary that estranged brother Prince William broke a promise to him never to leak stories or brief against one another.
Anderson Cooper is said to have won Harry's trust through his stance on issues close to the royals heart like mental health.
The 55-year-old, who is also a star of the CNN network, has campaigned to promote better mental health and hosts a podcast called All There Is.
