Ghosts of the landscape: how folklore and songs are key to rewilding Finland's reindeer
Ghosts of the landscape: how folklore and songs are key to rewilding Finland's reindeer.
For ecologists restoring the vast bogs of remote Karelia, wild reindeer are not just part of the environment but entwined with the ancient culture of the boreal forests.
Now, a plan is being hatched to reintroduce them. The peatland has been restored and the first wild reindeer will be released here in 2028. The aim is to eventually have a herd of 300.

Prince William and Catherine Duchess of Cambridge meet staff and pupils from Holy Trinity Church of England First School in Berwick-Upon-Tweed. Their Royal Highnesses visit recognised the work of teachers over the past year, including their efforts to keep schools open for vulnerable children and the children of key workers. During the visit, The Duke and Duchess met some of the school's teachers to hear how they adapted their operations to provide online learning and support to their students during the lockdown, and the measures that were subsequently put in place to allow pupils to safely return to school. Their Royal Highness will also join one of the school's classes as they take part in a special Reindeer lesson.

This first of its kind footage shows a polar bear hunting down an adult reindeer in the water. It was captured on video by Polish researchers in Norway.
The video and images, captured by the expedition’s cook Mateusz Gruszka in August 2021 on the Svalbard peninsula, shows the bear catching the reindeer and drowning it before dragging it ashore and eating it.
Although polar bears are opportunistic hunters, this is the first time they have been captured to hunt reindeer.
During her meal, the bear has to chase away scavengers, including polar foxes and birds before covering the remains with rocks and going for a 12 hour sleep.
Irregularity in polar bear behaviour has been explained by scientists as being in part due to climate change - with the Arctic ice cap often shrinking in summer, bears often need to move out of their traditional hunting grounds to find food.
