An operation never before carried out on a pregnant woman in the UK saved a Londoner and her unborn baby. Doctors at St George's hospital in Tooting managed to close one of Polly Marshall's uterine arteries, which supply blood to the child in the womb, after it swelled and was at risk of bursting with catastrophic consequences. She was 29 weeks pregnant but the intervention, with about 30 medics on standby in case something went wrong, enabled her to carry son Gus to 38 weeks and for him to be born healthy. Ms Marshall, 38, had been transferred from the Royal Free, in Hampstead, to St George's when doctors feared she was at risk of going into early labour after suffering extreme abdominal pain. Pictured are Polly Marshall with her partner Mat Fearon and their baby Gus Fearon.
