Royal Mint unveils new coins to commemorate christening of Prince George, Britain - 07 Oct 2013
The only official United Kingdom coins being struck to commemorate the christening of Prince George have gone into production today at The Royal Mint in Llantrisant, South Wales.
This is the first time that new UK coins have been produced to mark the christening of a member of the Royal family.
Approved by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Her Majesty the Queen and the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the coins feature the lily font that plays an important role in Royal christenings.
Swags of lilies ornament the inscription, which is flanked by two harp-playing cherubs to balance the design perfectly.
The motto at the foot of the coin is the traditional DIEU ET MON DROIT or 'God and my right' which is the motto of Prince George's great grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.
The new design will feature on the GBP 5 coin which will be available in both silver and gold.
Crossing of a baby's palm with silver is a long-established tradition, conferring good health and prosperity to newborns.
The coins have been designed by sculptor John Bergdahl, who has undertaken a number of prestigious commissions from The Royal Mint, including the Kilo coin for the 60th anniversary of the Queen's Coronation.
Commenting on his design John Bergdahl said: "It's a tremendous honour and privilege to have been chosen to design the first ever Royal christening coin. The design is baroque, a style that has been reborn many times and often featured in Royal artwork and traditions.
"One element that I knew I wanted to incorporate was the lily font from the Tower of London, which is a strong tradition in christenings for the Royal family. The motto is traditional and sums up the expectation carried by a young child, born to reign - regard...

"It took three months to make from start to finish - the wood is twelve years old and has a wonderful finish. The chair was designed as functional piece of furniture - the back curves around the body for comfort and provides a sense of containment.
"The curve also allows allows the front legs to flow seamlessly together and the whole thing was finished with white tinted wax oil to protect it.
"It was designed with longevity in mind - it is a highchair but can also be used without the restraining as His Royal Highness grows.

Prince William, Catherine Duchess of Cambridge and Prince George
Prince William, Catherine Duchess of Cambridge and Prince George at Bucklebury, Berkshire, Britain - Aug 2013
Beaming for the camera the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge look like any normal pair of proud new parents as they cradle their infant son. The photos, which were taken by Catherine's father Michael Middleton in early August, have been released by Kensington Palace today. They show William and Catherine sitting in the garden of the Middleton family home holding their son Prince George. In one image Kate, who is wearing a berry coloured dress, carefully holds the tiny royal as she stands close to William. In another the couple are sitting on the ground and have been joined by their cocker spaniel Lupo and, just seen in the background, Middleton family pet Tilly the retriever.
