TV grab of Gu Kailai in court
Gu Kailai given suspended death sentence for murder of British businessman Neil Heywood, Hefei, China - 20 Aug 2012
Chinese woman Gu Kailai has been given a two-year suspended death sentence for the murder of British man Neil Heywood. During her trial, a Chinese court heard how Gu, the wife of disgraced politician Bo Xilal, poisoned Mr Heywood using a solution of cyanide hydrochloride. The 42-year-old's body was discovered in a hotel room in Chongqing last November. In her defence Gu said she suffered a 'mental breakdown' and believed Mr Heywood intended to harm her 24-year-old son due to a property deal gone bad. She was handed a death sentence that was suspended in light of her mental state, her admissions of guilt and remorse, and her cooperation with the investigation. She will now serve a minimum of 14 years in prison and it is likely that her death sentence will be commuted to life imprisonment after two years good behaviour. She has also been stripped of her 'political rights' for life.
