FEATURE - Drei Wochen altes Nilpferdbaby Fritz trifft seine Schwester Fiona im Zoo von Cincinatti

Fritz, a baby hippo born on 3 August 2022 at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, got to meet his big sister in their outdoor habitat for the first time last Wednesday (24August2022).
Five-year-old Fiona was curious but took her cues from her mother, Bibi, and backed off when Fritz got almost close enough for a nose boop.
“This first intro went very well. Bibi was appropriately protective of Fritz but was not aggressive toward Fiona,” said Cincinnati Zoo’s director of animal care Christina Gorsuch. “The exposure was brief but a great first step.”
He had previously acclimatised well when venturing into his new habitat.
“Fritz has navigated the deepest part of the pool, and Bibi has demonstrated that she will keep him safe,” said Gorsuch. “They were unphased when staff came to get their first glimpse of the baby and we’re confident that they’re ready for their public debut.”
The hippo team will continue to do introductions and will rotate hippos in and out in different combinations until Fritz and his older brother, Tucker, who was born in September 2021, is able to join the full family, or ‘bloat, together.
“We will continue to put Fiona, Fritz, and Bibi together for short periods until we’re confident that the three are comfortable together,” said Gorsuch. “The next step will then be to add Tucker to the mix. We don’t have an exact timeline for when that will happen.”
