Cormorant eating a fish
Cormorant swallows a huge fish, Lyme Regis, Dorset, UK - 07 Dec 2017
A cormorant gets lucky just 2 metres from the shoreline with a flat fish. He found the wriggling fish difficult to swallow but - as with most fish or eels caught by these amazing fish catchers - it soon ended up in the cormorant's belly. He then flapped his wings to shed the water before flying off to digest his catch at Lyme Regis in Dorset.

The Cormorant struggles with the eel
Cormorant struggles to eat an eel, Abbotsbury, Dorset, Britain - 28 Jul 2014
This Cormorant found itself facing a slippery customer as it tried to bag itself some lunch. The hungry bird was spotted wrestling with an eel by photographer Richard Austin on the lagoon at Abbotsbury, Dorset. After snagging the tasty treat the Cormorant tossed it into the air in order to gulp it down like it would a fish. However, the eel was clearly not keen to be anyone's supper and put up a spirited fight. The Cormorant was forced to wrestle with the troublesome creature as it writhed in desperation. Ultimately, however, resistance proved to be futile and the Cormorant emerged victorious. The Cormorant is Britain's most prolific underwater avian predator and dines on fish, small eels and even water snakes. It dives from the surface, often making a characteristic half-jump, to give a more streamlined entry into the water. Once underwater it propel itself after its prey using its feet.

Triumphant Cormorant Shouts About Success
This triumphant Cormorant appears to be shouting about its success after catching and eating a juicy fish.
The victorious bird opened its beak wide and seemed to be crowing its delight to the sky following its rewarding fishing trip.
The hungry bird was spotted cruising for supper on a river in Cheshire by wildlife photographer Ben Hall.
Swimming along on the surface of the water, it quickly dived below after spotting a tasty treat swimming by - propelling itself using its feet.
Some cormorant species have been found to dive to depths of as much as 45 metres, so this particular specimen had no problem catching up to its prey.
Once back on the surface he was forced to juggle with the wriggling fish for a while but finally managed to gulp it down.
Ben comments: "This cormorant has a penchant for perch. He struggled with this one for about 5 minutes before finally managing to swallow it".
The replete bird then hopped onto a branch poking from the water to announce its success and smugly preen its feathers.

Eels On Wheels For Hungry Bird
It was 'eels on wheels' for this Cormorant as it dived beneath the murky sea at Lyme Regis looking for dinner.
Despite the terrible conditions making visibility virtually zero, the hungry bird managed to spot its prey beneath the waves and went in for the kill.
However, the slippery eel was clearly not keen to be anyone's supper and put up a spirited fight.
The Cormorant was forced to wrestle with the troublesome sea creature as it tried to wrap itself around its throat.

However, the slippery eel was clearly not keen to be anyone's supper and put up a spirited fight.
The Cormorant was forced to wrestle with the troublesome sea creature as it tried to wrap itself around its throat.
Ultimately, however, the eel's resistance proved to be futile and the victorious Cormorant tossed it in the air before swallowing it down.
The Cormorant is Britain's most prolific underwater avian predator and dines on fish, small eels and even water snakes.
It dives from the surface, often making a characteristic half-jump, to give a more streamlined entry into the water.
