One of Buffalo Bill's favourite guns with which he used to wow crowds in his famous Wild West show has sold for $40,625 (23,932). The legendary showman - real name William Cody - bought the six-shooter revolver in 1883, the same year he launched his circus-style travelling show. The 1873 Colt Frontier Six Shooter Revolver gun went under the hammer with a starting price of $37,500 (£22,000) at Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas. Although unremarkable to look at, the gun became one of Cody's favourite firearms and was among the few he still owned at the time of his death aged 70 in 1917 from kidney failure. It was passed down through Cody's family until it was sold at auction in 1988 to its most recent vendor, a collector from the US.

BUFFALO BILL CODY (1846-1917) No individual defined the image of the frontier more than William F. Cody, popularly known as Buffalo Bill. He was a Pony Express rider, Army scout, Indian fighter and buffalo hunter, but his true fame came from his over 30 years as a Wild West show performer and entrepreneur.
