REPORTAGE - East London: Alltag in Hoxton
30th November 2017. Spotlight Hoxton. Hoxton is an area of East London, England and part of the London Borough of Hackney. It is immediately north of the financial district of the City of London. Hoxton forms the western part of Shoreditch, being part of the ancient parish and subsequent Metropolitan Borough of Shoreditch prior to its incorporation into the London Borough of Hackney. By the end of the 20th century, the southern half of Hoxton had become a vibrant arts and entertainment district boasting a large number of bars, nightclubs, restaurants, and art galleries. Property prices have continued to rise steeply since the early years of the 21st century as property developers have moved to cash in on the area's trendy image, central location and transport links. Some galleries have, as a result, moved to nearby Shoreditch, or have relocated further afield to cheaper districts such as London Fields or Bethnal Green. Street scene, Hoxton Street Market.

It was almost closing time at Borough Market when the Plan Zheroes volunteers headed into the bustling alleyways to begin their surplus food collections. Within 20 minutes, the Plan Zheroes volunteers in their purple bibs had garnered 224kg of fresh produce and five local charities had arrived at their stall to divide up the bounty. Since Plan Zheroes started this initiative at Borough Market in 2014, they have rescued 29 tonnes of perfectly good food that would otherwise have been thrown in the bin, providing an impressive 58,000 meals to 33 charities working with the homeless, the elderly and people with mental health issues.
