BEACH OF PLAYA DEL CARMEN, RIVIERA MAYA, YUCATAN PENINSULA, MEXICO
RIVIERA MAYA and COSTA MAYA are new names for holiday areas along the coast of QUINTANA ROO. Deserted, unspoilt beaches alternate with large, ultra-modern tourist developments. In PLAYA DEL CARMEN, on the RIVIERA MAYA, a mixture of large hotel complexes and numerous individual hotels has grown up. Knut Wehner writes about the unique holiday attraction of the Yucatán, which blends Mayan culture with the essence of the Caribbean.

MEERUFENFUSHI ISLAND, NORTH MALE ATOLL, MALDIVES
To date hotels have been built on more than 80 islands in different atolls. The largest has rooms for about 800 guests, the smallest for about 14. More resorts are in the planning. This will give the populations of all the atolls a share in tourism. All hotels are island hotels. Meeru, one of the largest hotels on the island of Meerufenfushi, North Male Atoll. JETTY, IHURU ISLAND, NORTH MALE ATOLL, MALDIVES
In 1979 IHURU was opened up to tourism. The oval islet is just 200 yards wide and can be comfortably walked round in 15 minutes. The number who could stay here used to be limited by the island's fresh water supply. Today, a desalination-plant makes it possible to accommodate up to 74 guests on IHURU. COASTER DRIVEN ASHORE IN GALE AT DOVER
The 250-ton British coastal Collier ' Arch Glenn' was driven ashore at East Cliff, Dover, in the severe gale which swept the Straits of Dover today.
The vessel, loaded with coal, broke her moorings, and after going ashore was pounded by rough seas until she turned over and disappeared under huge waves.
Members of the crew were rescued by means of a long ladder from the ship to a stone jetty.
