NEWS - Russland: See mit hohem Phenolgehalt bei Ulan-Ude
A view of a lake with high phenol content in central Ulan-Ude. The lake is made of 70,000 tonnes of toxic waste accumulated from Locomotive and Railway Car Repair Plant since the 1930s. The phenol was produced by the gas generating station that was shut down in 2005. No efforts were made to clean up the lake or transport the waste to dedicated landfills. Since 5 October, environmental experts and local residents have been protesting against burning the phenol lake after a member of the Russian State Duma Nikolai Buduyev made a video address, informing on the relevant plans.
