Battle to retake Mosul, Iraq - 23 Oct 2016
Bartella, a mainly Christian town with a population of around 30,000 people before being taken by the Islamic State in August 2014, was captured two days ago by the Iraqi Army's Counter Terrorism force as part of the ongoing offensive to retake Mosul. Although ISIS militants were pushed back a large amount of improvised explosive devices are still being found in the town's buildings.

Who Needs A Bucket & Spade: Amazing Beach Art
Who needs a bucket and spade on the beach when you can use a modified tractor?
An artist has created the ultimate summer artwork by driving patterns into the sand.
Gunilla Klingberg's work A Sign in Space features huge patterns imprinted using a steamroller-type vehicle set-up.
The star-pattern is composed of truck tires attached to a beach cleaner tractor which print reliefs on the sand at low tide on Laga beach in Spain.
The manufactured steel-cylinder is driven from side to side of the beach in the morning, creating the pattern covering the whole beach area.
Following the lunar and tidal calendar, the pattern is remade again and again at all possible days at low tide.
The work A Sign in Space is performed on dates when the tidal calendar is synchronised with the beach cleaners early morning working schedule. The pattern will be created on days when the low tide hour fits the labour working hours until 15 September.
Klingberg explains: "At my first site visit to the nature reserve Urdaibai I was affected by the powerful tide that I thought was significant for the bay of Biscay. My idea was to make an artwork that was ephemeral and impermanent, reflecting nature's constant change.
"The cylinder is unique and totally "hand-made" by a couple of engineers and technicians that I collaborated with in Sweden, we transported it to Spain and it is then connected to the existing tractor that cleans the beach. For this we needed a towing system, so that part was made in Spain.
"The stars are also reminiscent of the symbol of a nation and the stars in the flag of the European Union as well as a symbol for revolutionary ideas and of course an image of the starry sky.
"After the printing has bee...

Gabriel Orozco exhibition, Tate Modern, London, Britain - 17 Jan 2011
The retrospective exhibition by Mexican artist Gabriel Orozco (b. 1962) is the largest presentation of his work in the UK. A sculptor of global significance, Orozco has become renowned for his experimentation with found objects, both natural and man made, which he subtly and playfully alters. Highlights of the exhibition include two interactive art works, Carambole with Pendulum 1996, a beautiful oval-shaped billiard table with several white balls and a red ball suspended from the ceiling which visitors are invited to interact with; and Elevator 1994, a lift saved from a demolished building which the artist cut into parts and levelled to his own height. Walking into the lift, visitors can experience the disconcerting effect of the altered dimensions.

DOGS' ROLL CALL
After being born without front legs, these pups are finding it wheelie easy to get about.
They are the first four Chihuahua pups in the world to have been fitted with a set of high tech wheels to make life just that little bit easier. And now that they've found their wheels, so to speak, there's no stopping them!
Three of the pups, who are triplets, found their way to the North Shore Animal League in New York after their sister shelter in Virginia was contacted by a backyard breeder.
The pups had all been born with no front legs, which is a problem that can happen with inbreeding.
Coincidentally, another Chihuahua with exactly the same problem was brought into the shelter at the same time.
All four were adopted by Donna Imhof, 48, who works at the animal shelter.
Her husband John helped to build the specially adapted front wheel drive carts to enable the dogs to go for a walk.
The contraptions are made out of aluminium and were assembled with velcro straps to hold them in place, and fleecy padding for comfortable support. They also have lightweight foam wheels so the dogs can easily move them around.
The carts were made thanks to donations that flooded into the animal shelter once the pup's plight was publicised.
Mrs Imhof said: "I fell head over heels in love with the dogs as soon as they arrived at the shelter.
"They were hanging onto life. They couldn't walk, move or even eat properly. It was heartbreaking.
"I just bonded with them straight away and they knew that I wanted to help them".
At the animal shelter the pups were given daily physiotherapy in order to strengthen their muscles. This enabled them to manage a few steps ...
