THAW, part of the Greenwich+Docklands International Festival, London, UK.
A 2.5-tonne block of melting ice suspended over Royal Albert Dock in London, forms the stage for THAW, part of the Greenwich+Docklands International Festival. Performed over 8 hours, this Australian aerial production sends an urgent call to climate action to Londoners on 24 and 25 August. Created by world-renowned Australian physical theatre company LEGS ON THE WALL in response to the devastating bushfires of 2019/20, THAW brings Londoners face to face with the urgent need for global climate action.
This colossal aerial production performed on a 2.5 tonne block of ice gathers intensifying power and urgency as the ice, suspended on a crane high above an iconic docklands landscape, gradually melts away. London.
    24/8/24.

WINTER'S TALE IN FOUR ICY EPISODES

    29 January 1950

This grim tale of treachery, opportunism, disillusion and good comradeship unfolded on the gleaming ice of the frozen pond on Wimbledon Common, london today ( Sunday)
Villain of he piece was the ice, which enticed crowds of skaters on to its smiling surface but singled out Betty Dodd and William Sowan as its victims, when it cracked and drew them into its freezing depths.
Opportunist was Mr Samuelson Movietone cameraman, who seized his chance for some good pictures but was sadly let down when he too sank through a suddenly yeilding surface.
Hero of this frosty melodrama was the St John's Ambulance man who threw the strugglers a rope and was ready with a flask of hot tea when they floundered to the bank.
EPISODE THREE: A St John's Ambulance Man wading in the icy water throws a succouring rope to Betty Dodd and William Sowan splashing to the bank. (FOTO:DUKAS/TOPFOTO)
