A new hybrid-electric engine designed to enable affordable, long-range supersonic flight is to be developed.
The combined-cycle propulsion system is designed to enable efficient long-range supersonic flight up to three times the speed of sound, at commercially viable costs.
Unlike conventional jet engines, the new Duality engine combines a turbo-generator with multiple electric motors.
The propulsion system is being developed by UK electric powertrain company Helix and California-based aerospace firm Astro Mechanica.
Astro is developing the world’s first supersonic aircraft capable of high-speed, long-range travel that is commercially viable.
The Duality system is designed to boost fuel efficiency as well as being able to power an aircraft at speeds over Mach 1 / 1,234 km/h.
The current prototype uses four Helix electric motors each weighing just 31.3 kg, to drive a two-stage compressor.
The set up delivers up to 400 kilowatts of peak power and 470 newton meters of torque.
This unusually high power-to-weight ratio allows the engine to meet the extreme demands of supersonic airflow and maximise efficiency across various flight conditions.
That makes it effective from takeoff through to speeds up to Mach 3 / 3,704 km/h.
