FEATURE - Blick zurück: Fitness-Training zuhause in den 1950er Jahren
    Original 1950s caption:
    Fitness in the home .

Life is hard for the modern office girl . Up early in the morning , she rushes breakfast , rushes to catch a bus or train into town . She sits at a desk all day long then rushes home again in the evening ,. But she has no time for exercise . While she has been growing tired in the office , she has also , all too often , been growing tubby . The answer is , of-course , exercise . In these pictures , pretty eighteen-years-old Julie Martin , London actress, singer and dancer demonstrates her method of keeping her figure trim .

PICTURE SHOWS:- Julie's main workout equipment consists of a broom and a length of rope . The rope is doubled and tied firmly to the broom ; the broom is wedged across a doorway .

SUNDAY CRISIS IS AT THE ZOO

The Sunday peace at the London Zoo was broken by drama today as this picture was taken at the Camel House . Word had reached the keeper that the infant born yesterday to Peggy was not well .
The baby camel was lying listless on the ground ; the need for examination was urgent . But first the mother had to be persuaded to leave her offspring . The keeper is seen here using a broom as a ' persuader ' , despite the glint of protest in Peggy's eye . Later , the baby refused to take food , even when tempted with meat extract . It was considered to be gravely ill and unlikely to live until nightfall .

    LONDON SCOUTS REFIT FLOATING H.Q.

Boys of the 2nd City of London Sea Scout Troop are having a busy Saturday afternoon aboard the ' England ', their new floating headquarters moored at Brewers Quay in the pool of London.
The boat , 110 foot. long and painted blue and white, is being refitted by the boys during the weekends.
The ' England ' has had a chequered career: it was formerly a river pleasure steamer and at one time was the property of Lady Astor; it has also in the past been used as a Gosport ferry steamer, propelled by paddles.
The ' England ' has plenty of sleeping accommodation, and when the refit has been completed sea scouts will be able to spend long weekends aboard to have their training.

LONDON HEALS HER SCARS: WORK BEGINS ON WESTMINSTER ABBEY

Work has begun on removing 80,000 sandbags which protected precious monuments in Westminster Abbey, London and it is hoped that within twelve months the Abbey will be restored to its former glory. Air raid damage estimated at £135,000 but efficient precautions against enemy action saved every feature of historic interest. The oldest stained glass was removed at the beginning of the war, and the rest has not been greatly damaged, they include the Dean's house, the Cloisters and Little Cloisters and the buildings of Westminster school and the choir school. although the Abbey is expected to be restored by the Summer of 1946, it will be much longer before the houses are rebuilt.
