Photo essay at London and Wipsnade zoos. The ZSL’s are under hueg threat. There is a government fund to help them but they can only access it if they are within 12 weeks of closure. If ever London and Wipsnade zoos got that close to closure they would have already had to start rehoming thier thousands of animals. So far they have recieved none of the governement help money, and yet zoos need constant staff, have hueg food and vetinary bills along with needing to retain a large percentage of thier staff. The Nigerian Dwarf Goats and Pygmy goats have really missed the human interaction they would usually have with visitors. They are one of the few species where visitors ARE encouraged to pet and stroke them. They really enjoy the stimulation. To make sure they don'tÕ become depressed many of the zoos other keepers take a few mins too visit them each day and give them the attention they need. Their keeper takes them on a daily stimulating walk round the zoo. They are trained to respond to a whistle. I noticed that the primates [another species who miss the human side to the zooÕs visitors] are most excited to see the goats and many came to the edges of their enclosures to watch the goats.

One of ZSLÕs most important activities is itÕs extensive conservation work. Here are Partula Snails which were extinct a few decades ago,. Through years and years of painstaking work the zoo has brought them back from extinction. ZSL had to postpone last yearÕs release of Partula snails in French Polynesia. They are bred in special facilities then carefully transported, a thousand each year. These are dead snails. Each one is labeled and tested and registered. Eventually all these dead snails will end up in the Natural History museum and be of service to naturalists and scientists in the future.

One of ZSL’s most important activities is it’s extensive conservatiion work. Here are Partula Snails which were extinct a few decades ago,. Through years and years of painstaking work thez zoo has broght them back from extinction. ZSL had to postpone last year’s release of partula snails in French Polynesia. They. are bred in special facilities then carefully transported, a thousand yeach year. These are dead snails. Each one is labeled and tested and registered. Eventually all these dead snails will end up in the bnatural Hiistory museum and be of service to naturalists and scientists in the furute.

London's zoos in lockdown - photo essay
Photo essay at London and Whipsnade zoos. The ZSLÕs are under huge threat. There is a government fund to help them but they can only access it if they are within 12 weeks of closure. If ever London and Whipsnade zoos got that close to closure they would have already had to start rehoming their thousands of animals. So far they have received none of the government help money, and yet zoos need constant staff, have huge food and veterinary bills along with needing to retain a large percentage of their staff.
