Flood Crisis Deepens In Himalayan Valley
A group of Kashmiri women looks on as rising waters swallow their home on the outskirts of Srinagar, India, on Thursday, part of a flood that engulfs dozens of villages across the Himalayan Valley. Thousands are displaced, with many fearful of worsening conditions. Agricultural land now lies submerged, houses are damaged, and families flee to higher ground. With road connectivity snapped and shops shuttered, stranded residents face severe shortages of essential supplies as transport services remain paralyzed. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues a red alert, warning of heightened risks of landslides, flash floods, and further road blockages. The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway--the Valley's lifeline--remains closed for the ninth straight day, deepening the crisis and cutting Kashmir off from vital supplies. Rescue teams begin evacuating vulnerable populations, but fear grips the region as memories of the devastating 2014 floods resurface. Adding to the tragedy, at least seven people are killed in a landslide in Himachal Pradesh, underscoring the wider human toll of extreme weather sweeping the Himalayan region (Photo by Sajad Hameed/NurPhoto). -

US National Guard deployed to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina
EXCLUSIVE: September 8, 2005 - New Orleans, Louisiana, United States: Clothilde Mack would not evacuate when hurricane Katrina neared. She stayed put to look after her three cats. She lived for more than half her 85 years in a clapboard house in the Crescent City's Lower Ninth District. She had sat out big storms before. As the waters rose and neighbors fled or drowned, she called the emergency 911 number on her mobile telephone. Ten days later, members of the Oregon National Guard rescued her by boat. Mrs Mack almost sang with joy when the rescue party arrived. "Thank the Lord for you all!" she exclaimed. "I waited and waited but no one came to my door."
