Piglet Squid with what appears to be a smile caused by skin pigments, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, California, America - 2009
The Piglet Squid always looks cheerful thanks to what appears to be a huge grin. The size of a small orange, the squid - Latin name Helicocranchia pfefferi - can commonly be found in deepwater (greater than 100m) in most of the world's oceans. Pigments dot its skin - making it seem happy. Scientists gave it the name thanks to its tuft of eight arms and two tentacles on its 'head', and because of its shape when inflated with water. Its body is almost totally clear revealing a dark mass that is the internal organs and barely visible, feather-like gills. It also has a large light producing organ (photophore) beneath each of its eyes. The picture was taken by California's Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. CMA Director Mike Schaadt tells us: "Our photographer Gary Florin took a marvellous picture of this rarely seen yet fairly common member of the deep sea plankton community. The angle Gary took the picture at makes it look comical."

37-year-old Dolly, who is thought to be the oldest cow in Britain, Mistley Place Park Animal Rescue Centre, Essex, Britain - 15 May 2008
37-year-old Jersey cow Dolly is thought to be the oldest cow in Britain. She was rescued at the age of 18 by Mike Taylor and his wife Maureen, owners of Mistley Place Park Animal Rescue Centre, when her owner sent her to slaughter. They decided that the senior citizen cow deserved to live out her last few years in comfort, but little did they know that those last few years would actually stretch to 19, and still counting. At the grand old age of 37 Dolly is still firmly ensconced in a luxury field at the rescue centre, which is home to 2,000 rescued animals and birds ranging in size from mice to Shire horses. And, according to Mike, she's still going strong. "She looks a little wobbly like she could do with a Zimmer frame," he comments, "but according to the vet she's in good health".

Heavy snow brought Britain to a standstill today (2nd February) in the worst snowfall in 18 years. Airports were closed, buses and trains cancelled and motorists advised not to take their vehicles on to the road. Hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren stayed at home after their schools were cancelled and many commuters also had the day off after finding themselves unable to get into work.

A tiny 8 week old Otter Cub found alone and wandering the roads of Exmoor near Winsford, Somerset, Britain - Mar 2009
Hope the otter has every reason to be smiling after cheating death. Just days ago the eight-week-old was found wandering alone along the roads of Exmoor near Winsford. If she hadn't been found and rescued by a kind-hearted member of the public the seriously underweight cub would have perished. After being looked after for the evening by her rescuer, Hope was then taken to the Secret World Wildlife Centre in Somerset. According to the centre, when she was found the tiny animal was just half the weight she should have been for her age. However, she has now come on leaps and bounds. It is hoped that, if the cheeky cub continues to improve, she will be released back into the wild next year.

The Happiest Swimmer in the Ocean
    **MANDATORY CREDIT GARY FLORIN/REX FEATURES**

THE HAPPIEST SWIMMER IN THE OCEAN

The credit has crunched, the weather is cold, but nothing can wipe the smile from this little fellow's face.

Called a Piglet Squid, this sea creature always looks cheerful thanks to what appears to be a huge grin.

About the size of a small orange, the squid - Latin name Helicocranchia pfefferi - can commonly be found in deepwater (greater than 100m) in most of the world's oceans.

But this cute chap is more distinctive than most thanks to pigments which dot its skin - making it seem like the happiest swimmer in the ocean.

Scientists gave it the name thanks to its tuft of eight arms and two tentacles on its 'head', as well as its habit of looking porky when inflated with water.

Its body is almost totally clear revealing a dark mass that is the internal organs and barely visible, feather-like gills. It also has a large light producing organ (photophore) beneath each of its eyes.

The picture was taken by California's Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. CMA Director Mike Schaadt says: "Our photographer Gary Florin took a marvellous picture of this rarely seen yet fairly common member of the deep sea plankton community. The angle Gary took the picture at makes it look comical."
