    DUKAS_144058302_EYE
United Ukrainian Ballet: Giselle review - a classic revitalised
Choreographer Alexei Ratmansky and a company featuring exiled dancers deliver a moving production with an urgent tone.

This production is little short of a miracle. The United Ukrainian Ballet - a crack company of dancers, some of whom have fled their homeland - ardently refresh a classic. Despite the wrenching context, it is immensely moving that everyone involved pours so much thought, heart and art into this revelatory project.

    DUKAS_144004506_EYE
Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo review - arabesques, pratfalls and a swan on wheels
Mixing technical skill with slapstick hilarity, the Trocks are as engaging as ever in this symphony of perfectly timed mistakes.

In the past few years there has been an emerging discussion about ballet's rigid gender roles, and male or non-binary dancers performing traditionally female roles. But Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo were ahead of that curve by nearly 50 years.

The Trocks, as they’re known, are an all-male troupe founded in New York in the 1970s who dance classical ballerina roles in pointe shoes and tutus. They perform with serious technique alongside high camp and slapstick hilarity.

Rehearsal 2nd September 2022. The live performance is on Sat 3rd September 2022. 32 outstanding young dancers from across England present a new contemporary work, exploring the relationship between movement, voice and music. Quartier Paradis dives into parallel universes where there is no clear endgame, a place built on the fantasy of greed for a power that continuously shifts. Where ritual, memories and ancestral heritage will keep you standing; revealing the alarming reality of a society locked in a cycle of tyranny. © Elliott Franks / eyevine
