A WAVE FOR THE LAST FLYING BOAT - UNTIL 1953

Diminished staff at the Southampton Marina airport - to be closed down - wave farewell as the B.O.A.C.flying boat ' Somerset ' leaves her berth to begin her last flight, today.
Bound for Africa, she takes the last B.O.A.C.flying boat trip until 1953 , when the new Princess flying boats are brought into service. The great 1935 fleet of flying boats - the pride of the Empire in those days - has been gradually replaced by more economical land planes. This will be the first time that Britain is without flying boats since the formation of Imperial Airways 26 years ago. Until the new aircraft - massive 10 engined Princess aircraft that carry 105 passengers each - all British routes will be centred on London.
