    United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and his entourage arrived in Naqoura, a town on Lebanon's Mediterranean coast about 4 km north of the Israeli border and 100 km south of Beirut in two white United Nations helicopters. Annan and his team visited the home to headquarters of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, where they had lunch with the troops.

    The Ethiopian Airlines Flight 409, carrying 90 people, crashed in a ball of flame off the Lebanese coast just after takeoff in stormy weather in the early hours of the morning. A massive international search and rescue operation involving helicopters and ships was hastily scrambled as President Michel Sleiman ruled out foul play and grim-faced officials played down hopes of any survivors.
