The picture shows Trees and Fog by Preston Stoll, 29. It was taken at Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, not too far from Steamboat Springs, Colorado. He said: 'On the morning after a bitterly cold night in December, I left Steamboat Springs in search of frost and any winter weather I could find. I wandered the roads and forests near the edge of the morning snow showers to find where interesting transitions in weather might be seen. This was the last photo of many taken that morning and my favourite by far. The 26 finalists for this year's Weather Photographer of the Year have been announced and the public are being invited to vote for their favourite.The Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS), which celebrates its 170th birthday this year, in association with AccuWeather, has put the shortlisted pictures on their website and people can visit photocrowd.com/wpotyvote to vote until September 25.The popular competition, which is now in its fifth year, has attracted entries from around the world.

These haunting photographs show the remnants of the once all-powerful Soviet empire.
They are the work of Eric Lusito, who spent six years travelling throughout the former Soviet world from East Germany to Mongolia, from Poland to Kazakhstan to seek out remains of the military installations that embodied the ambition and the might of the USSR.
Describing himself as working like an archaeologist, the French photographer says his project "Traces of the Soviet Empire" is a photographic record of the land and architecture - haunted by the symbols and history of a once powerful Empire.
The on-going project takes the form of three series: exteriors, interiors, and found photographs "images from another time, another space and another world".
What he found was colourful propaganda wall art, faded frescos of Lenin, discarded gas masks, and huge monuments, including those in the shapes of a soldier and a sword.

Raising a Family Behind Bars: Inmates Families Move Into Prison After Typhoon Haiyan
A New York-based photographer journeyed to the Philippines to meet families who were forced to relocate to prison after Typhoon Yolanda left them homeless.
Lawrence Sumulong went to the Leyte Provincial Jail in April this year, to document the unusual situation where a large number of displaced families have been forced to move in with their incarcerated relatives.
At the Leyte Provincial Jail, women and children walk freely among inmates.
While most inmates claim to be serving time for petty crimes such as theft or drug trafficking, their photo releases reveal many more are actually serving time for more serious crimes.
Lawrence shot the moving series in one day, and assembled the photos in a moving photo series titled Raising a Family Behind Bars.
Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) cut across nine regions in the central Philippines on November 8, 2013, leaving behind a wide swath of destruction.
The storm was a category five, with wind gusts up to 235 miles per hour, causing massive landslides and flooding.
Over 14 million people were affected, including five million who saw their homes damaged or destroyed, while over 6000 people lost their lives.
Lawrence wanted to investigate what had happened to the people who were left with nothing after the typhoon, and in particular those who had no choice but to take refuge in prison.
"My assignment was to verify whether families of the inmates were continuing to live inside the destroyed jail, which was a story that journalist, Aya Lowe had originally broken.
"Leading up to my trip, there was news that access to the jail was restricted and the families had long since relocated."

Kate, 31, and William 30, have been imagined as aged 81 and 80 by researcher and artist Nickolay Lamm and Nikolett Meresz for MyVoucherCodes.co.uk.
Speaking to The Huffington Post, Lamm said: "These aged depictions symbolise the passage of time and our wish for Prince William and Kate to live a long and happy life together."

Fish Fight: Bald Eagles Clash Over Tasty Catch
A bald eagle is almost on its back as it rears up its talons against a swooping rival.
While two more of the predatory birds have a fierce high-speed battle in mid-air over tasty salmon.
These jaw-dropping shots of amazing battles between the birds of prey were captured last month by photographer Arash Hazeghi in Haines, Alaska.
He explains: "The eagles prey on salmon in shallow water by dragging them to the river bank. The locations where the river becomes shallow and narrow are best since most salmon seem to converge and then get stock in shallow waters.
"They will battle over salmon in mid-air at high-speed. The holder tries to fly as fast as they can to save the fish, the aggressor has to fly faster snatching the fish from behind and then dive below the holder."
Arash managed to get amazing shots of the birds aggressively swooping at each other.
"This is an interesting behaviour that happens in a split second when an incoming bald eagle buzzes another eagle that is standing on the ground.
"The attacking eagle extends his talons to hit the standing bird. The standing bird swings backward extending his talons to defend against the incoming bird. The defending eagle is in a completely inverted position."
He also observed the juvenile birds trying to take on their elders.
"The younger eagles have a few dark patches remaining in the head and tail areas. One tried to buzz the mature bird as he tried to claim his catch, but the mature eagle dodged the attack quickly."

Who Ape All The Pies?
It looks like this orangutan needs to go on a New Year's diet.
Louise Bleakly, 69, snapped the portly primate as she lazed by a tree after over-indulging.
The sedentary creature soaked up the midday sun at Taman Safari Park near Jakarta, Indonesia - and was too lazy to even swing on the trees and ropes.
Louise, a retired social worker, said: "These orangutans were all in a special enclosure which was a wide-open, lush, green area.
"There were about 20 orangutans and they were going about their daily lives, which looked much like ours on occasion.
"It was around noon time at the park and it was rather hot.
"There was an area where the orangutans could swing in the trees but I only saw one using the rope.
"The orangutans in question seem to lead a sedentary way of life.
"The really plump ones look like females.
"There were male orangutans in the enclosure and they were all of normal weight and more animated."
Louise, from California, United States, added: "Later in my trip, I observed orangutans in the wild in Borneo in a conservation area.
"It seemed to me that the orangutans in captivity used more human-like gestures."

In 2007 Hans Stakelbeek was commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to document the reconstruction of Afghanistan during the efforts to restore peace and stability to the country.
Stakelbeek made four trips last year, shooting in Kabul and Uruzgan, as well as other remote areas.
As the project developed, he also became interested in capturing the stories of the people he came to know, as well as the reconstruction efforts required by his official posting.
'Out of the Dust' presents a set of images that pays tribute to the determination of the Afghan people to survive and live as normally as possible through the upheaval - building homes, going to school and working and playing in testing and frightening times.
The collection gives a rare view of daily life in Afghanistan without a military slant and each photograph comes complete with Stakelbeek's own written commentary, which reveals the stories within.
The exhibition is an up-to-date presentation of current life and an opportunity to see how the country is changing, how the reconstruction is progressing and to witness the perseverance of ordinary people in an extraordinar...
