THAILAND: Mae La camp for Burmese refugees
NGOs are tackling problems of ground water pollution and water contamination in the Mae La refugee camp. Located on Thailand's western border near the town of Mae Sot, the Mae La camp for Burmese refugees was set up in 1984. Refugees from the Karen people persecuted by the Junta in Myanmar made the camp's population swell to 50,000. Today the camp has 43,000 inhabitants within its 2km2 area. Overcrowding means hygiene and sanitation conditions are poor in the camp, and has led to outbreaks of cholera and other diseases. NGOs, such as French organisation Solidarites, are active in Mae La, working on improving conditions. Mae La, THAILAND-05/2008 (FOTO: DUKAS/SIPA)

Several Thousand People Gathered In Paris For Gaza
Participants gather during a rally to show their support for activists aboard a boat stopped by Israeli forces en route to deliver aid to Gaza, in Paris, France, on June 9, 2025. Israeli forces intercept a Gaza-bound aid boat on June 9, preventing the activists on board, including Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg, from reaching the blockaded Palestinian territory. The Madleen sets sail from Italy on June 1 to raise awareness of food shortages in Gaza, which the United Nations calls the ''hungriest place on Earth.'' After 21 months of war, the UN warns the entire population is at risk of famine. (Photo by Jerome Gilles/NurPhoto) -

Tensions At The End Of The Pro-Palestinian Demonstration In Paris
Tensions exist between the police and climbers who hang Palestinian flags on the Statue of Liberty of the Monument de la Republique, leading to their arrest. This occurs after a pro-Palestinian demonstration called by several French unions at the Place de la Republique in Paris, France, on June 14, 2025. The French Democratic Confederation of Labour trade union (CFDT), the French trade union General Confederation of Labour (CGT), the French National Union of Autonomous Trade Unions (Unsa), the French group of trade unions Union syndicale Solidaires (SUD), and the French trade union ''Federation Syndicale Unitaire'' (FSU) call for people to join ''the mobilisation for Palestine'' on June 14, 2025, and denounce ''the Israeli authorities' mortifying headlong rush and the atrocities'' in Gaza, according to a joint statement.
