MAYOR 'S PARTY FOR DUSTMEN WHO HELPED MAKE WESTMINSTER WASTE PAPER DRIVE A RECORD
The men who helped to make the Westminster (London) waste paper drive a record - dustmen, sweepers, and ARP helpers, were entertained to a tea party by the Mayor of Westminster, Alderman, W Stanley Edgson.
The party was given to the men to celebrate the success of the seven day salvage drive which piled up a total of 850 tons of waste paper.

Duren Germany, after Allied Air Forces and American artillery had bombarded the city to ease the advance of the US First Army infantrymen and "tankers" who captured the town. Craters and shell holes, visible throughout the picture, overlap in the centre where a saturation effect was produced. The photograph was taken by a pilot in Tactical Reconnaissance Group, commanded by Colonel George W Peck, of Ninth Air Force. This Group, known as "Peck's Bad Baoys" photographed the entire Normandy area before the invasion and thel ength and breadth of the Siegfried Line before the Allied Armies reached that barrier.

AMERICAN GENERAL INDUCTED AS PRIVATE IN FAMOUS FRENCH REGIMENT
Major General S Leroy Irwin, of Washington DC, Commander of the US 5th Infantry Division, with Major Raymond du Pavillion, was recently inducted as an honorary private in the 30 Battalion of the Chasseurs de Pied, the famous "Blue Devils". Troops under Major General Irwin played a part in the liberation of Metz.

The Government plan for the setting up of emergency nursery centres in reception areas for the young children of evacuees is being speeded up. With the co-operation of the Ministry of the Ministry of Health and the Board of Education, the Nursery Schools Association has launched a campaign to establish centres. The problem of accommodation has become very serious and a woman architect has drawn up a plan for the construction of nursery centres, which would accommodate up to 50 children. The first two of this type will be openend in Guildford in a fortnight. It will give the evacuee mothers an opportunity to do war work knowing that their children are well cared for.

AMERICAN MEMBER OF FREE FRENCH FORCES WEDS IN LONDON
Corporal L Lowell Bennett, of South Grange, New Jersey, USA an American now serving with the Free French Army, was married at Christ Church, Hampstead, to Miss Enid Elizabeth Walker - a 20 year old Hampstead girl.
Corporal Lowell Bennet drove an american ambulance in France, was awarded the Croix de Guerre for gallantry. After being held as a prisoner of war he came to London to join the Free French Army and it was during a visit to the American Eagle Club in London that he net one of the helpers - Miss Enid Walker - and the first romance of the Eagle Club developed.

BOYS MAKE OWN WOODEN FRAMES FOR SEEDS AT SCHOOL
Mr A E Clarke, headmaster of Elmbridge Camp School has instructed his pupils in the art of making cold frames for the seeds that they plant. First of all they were taught bricklaying with the headmaster by a local bricklayer and later how to construct the wooden frames. In addition the boys have painted the school shutters and are excellent boot repairers.

THREE WEEK OLD BLITZ BABY LIVES IN IRON LUNG
Three week old David Henry Gray, who was born with a crushed lung is putting up a magnificent fight for life in an iron lung at St Johns Hospital, Chelmsford. He has put up such a grim struggle that his condition is definitely improving and at this rate of progress he should be out of hospital in two weeks. Mrs Gray, the mother, was living in East London last September, and endured the worst nights of the German air blitz. The iron lung, one of those given by Lord Nuffield to combat infantile paralysis was loaned to St Johns hospital by another Chelmsford Hospital.

3,000 veterans of Rommel's Afrika Korps, palm-tree badges in the lapels of their civilian jackets , attended a reunion at Iserlohn , in the British Zone of Germany . Rommel's widow and his son Manfred were present , as were five former generals. 60 year old General Ludwig Cruewell, a returned prisoner of war , declared in a speech that Germans whould not be mere mercenaries in the defence of the West but equal partners .
