A plastic bag converted into a fashion top has broken records by selling for €18,200 euros.
The bag was adapted by Belgian fashion designer and artist Martin Margiela.
The bag was first conceived to be worn as a top in Margiela’s Spring-Summer 1990 runway show.
Experts said that by transforming a disposable bag into a garment, Margiela literally wrapped the body in the remnants of consumerism, poking fun at the blatant branding prevalent in luxury fashion at the time.
The bottom of the bag, from French retail chain Monoprix, was cut away turning the handles into shoulder straps and was worn inside out.
The bag was sold at a Paris fashion auction organised by two salerooms— London’s Kerry Taylor Auctions and Chez Maurice on November 6th.
The bag had been expected to fetch up to €6,000 euros but went for just over three times that amount.
Another example of the plastic bag top resides in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
The previous auction record for one of these tops was €13,750 set in 2019.

Flag Day
ÔFlag Day (or The Last Refuge of a Scoundrel)' by Craig Easton. The series of photos has been made mostly since the beginning of the Brexit referendum in 2016 in response to the proliferation of national flags Craig noticed flying all around the UK. "This rise in the need to Õshow your coloursÕ and wave the national flag seems to me to be a symbol of a growing divide amongst people and a retreat to some sort of nostalgic notion of nationalism. All fuelled by a rise in identity politics and a scapegoating of ÔothersÕ as the architects of whatever misfortune we may feel. The pictures were made as I travelled the UK from East Sussex to Shetland and from Great Yarmouth to Belfast.Ó Location: Oxford
