A new bionic knee that can help amputees walk faster, climb stairs, and avoid obstacles more easily than with a traditional prosthesis has been developed by engineers.
It is aimed at people who have lost a leg above the knee.
Unlike prostheses in which the residual limb sits within a socket, the new system is directly integrated with the user’s muscle and bone tissue.
This enables greater stability and gives the user much more control over the movement of the prosthesis.
Participants in a small clinical study said the limb felt more like a part of their own body.
During a traditional amputation, pairs of muscles that take turns stretching and contracting are usually severed, disrupting the normal agonist-antagonist relationship of the muscles.
This disruption makes it very difficult for the nervous system to sense the position of a muscle and how fast it’s contracting.

OPS: The new bionic knee can help people with above-the-knee amputations walk faster, climb stairs, and avoid obstacles more easily than they could with a traditional prosthesis. The new system is directly integrated with the user’s muscle and bone tissue (bottom row right). This enables greater stability and gives the user much more control over the movement of the prosthesis.

A capsule-like device that allows anyone to remotely control a robotic avatar is set to hit the market.
The device is equipped with a muscle sensor, speaker, and display.
According to the maker, the so-called “Capsule Interface” lets the user transmit tarot bodily movements to a robot to make it perform a variety of tasks.
For example, by moving feet slightly, the robot will walk.
Hand movements will get the robot to lift or push objects.
The capsule ’s high-precision muscle sensors are said to detect even extremely small movements such as the user’s muscles expanding and contracting.
The Japanese company behind it, H2L, said this method of robot control conveys tactile nuances not possible with other command systems..
To help the user, they wear a headset that feeds back audiovisual information from the robot thong a display screen.
They see what the robot sees.
According to H2L, the capsule allows users to feel as if their body has been transported to the robot.

OPS: Using the Capsule Interface to control a Unitree H1 robot.

Marlene Flowers a new start after 60: I always battled with my body image - until I became a bodybuilder at 64
After two divorces and an eating disorder, Marlene Flowers knew a change was needed. Her son suggested she start building her strength and she soon found her self-confidence growing ...

In 2021, at 64 years old, Marlene Flowers entered her first bodybuilding competition. Oiled, tanned and wearing a bikini, the auto repair shop owner from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, found herself under bright lights on stage, twisting and contorting to show off her taut muscles alongside people half her age. Once the flexing was over, she then performed a one-minute posing routine to the theme song from Flashdance, one of her favourite films.

Marlene Flowers poses for a portrait at the WHS Wilfred R. Cameron Wellness Center.
