'Not just a museum': Kenya's seed bank offers unexpected lifeline for farmers
Set up to conserve traditional seeds, the Genetic Resources Research Institute is now helping smallholders diversify with crops resilient to the rapid changes in climate.

Genetic Resources Research Institute was opened in 1988, during the country's "green revolution", this little-known national gene bank was set up to hold and conserve seeds from the traditional crops that were in danger of disappearing as farmers and agricultural industry moved to higher-yield varieties.

Healthcare to go: roadside clinics help keep Kenya’s truckers rolling
A life on the road puts drivers at risk of hypertension and diabetes but often puts doctors out of reach. A network of clinics on key routes is helping to combat lifestyle diseases.

The health facility, based in Mlolongo, on the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway, attracts a steady flow of patients. As well as workers and residents from the area, it also treats drivers from the truckers' rest stop across the road, as one of 19 roadside health facilities run by the nonprofit North Star Alliance, offering priority healthcare to mobile populations.

Alphonse Wambua, a truck driver, undergoes a medical examination by Billy Eli, a clinician at Mlolongo Wellness Center in Machakos County, Kenya.
