Ralph the bald penguin models his new personalised wetsuit
Ralph the bald penguin gets a special personalised wetsuit, Marwell Wildlife Park, Hampshire, Britain - 11 Jun 2010
Ralph became an international superstar when he started to wear a wetsuit for protection against the elements due to moulting much quicker than other penguins, leaving him with sensitive bald patches. Initially keepers designed a suit from the leg of an adult wetsuit however in 2013 Californian surf brand O?Neill designed Ralph his very own custom wetsuit in a sponsorship deal normally reserved for surf and snowboarding stars. Eight months ago Ralph was diagnosed with arthritis, an incurable and degenerative age-related condition which was well managed with medication until recently. Taking all factors into careful consideration and in order to prevent any unnecessary distress or pain to Ralph, we took the difficult decision to euthanase him.

    RALPH'S SPECIAL PENGUIN SUIT

Meet Ralph - the only penguin in the world with his own personalised wetsuit.

The Humboldt penguin had the mini wetsuit created for him after he lost all his feathers and zookeepers feared he wouldn't be able to swim with his friends.

Unlike all his fellow penguin chums, who lose their old feathers over a few weeks to make way for a fresh set, little Ralph's fell out in just one day.

Fearing the two foot high creature could get severely burnt by the sun and might get depressed being kept inside for three weeks, zookeepers had the special suit custom made for him.

Last year was the first time the 10 year old wore a wetsuit, which was fashioned from the leg of a suit which was donated by a member of staff's husband after keeper's appealed for one.

However, after seeing Ralph and his second hand swimwear, a member of public who designs clothes for dogs came forward to create one especially for Ralph - complete with his name on the back.

The 10-year-old penguin couldn't be happier with his new clothes, which have caused a bit of a stir at his enclosure in Marwell Wildlife, near Winchester, Hants.

Helen Jeffreys, from Marwell Wildlife, said: "Ralph absolutely loves the new suit, even more than last year's.

"This is a new and improved version - it's made out of a more flexible material.

"It allows him to swim easier and has velcro that can be adjusted to give him more room when he grows more feathers.

"Now he's swimming around the enclosure and splashing about with all the other penguins as usual.

"It's not inhibiting him in any way and it's not bothering him. He's just getting on with his daily business and sharing the duties of keeping...

Ralph the bald penguin gets a special personalised wetsuit, Marwell Wildlife Park, Hampshire, Britain - 11 Jun 2010
    RALPH'S SPECIAL PENGUIN SUIT

It would seem that Ralph is delighted with his new penguin suit.

The bald bird is currently showing off his new attire - a personalised wetsuit - to all his jealous penguin pals at Marwell Wildlife Park, near Winchester.

The new wetsuit, which features Ralph's name prominently, was created by a member of the public to replace the featherless penguin's previous one.

Penguins regularly lose their feathers over a period of a few weeks in order to make way for new ones.

However, in Ralph's case he loses all of his feathers in one go - leaving him extremely vulnerable to getting sunburnt.

Due to this, in the past keepers have been forced to keep him indoors for three weeks while his new feathers grow - something he doesn't like.

So in order to tackle the problem, last year keepers made a unique wetsuit for the 10-year-old Humboldt using the leg of a donated human suit.

However, after spotting Ralph in his second hand swimwear a kind-hearted member of public - who designs clothes for dogs - decided to lend a helping hand.

This means that this year a proud Ralph has been kitted out in a specially made wetsuit, which is made from a more flexible material and fixes with velco.

So Ralph's pale skin is protected from the sun and he is still able to keep up with his other feathered friends in the pool.

He will now wear his suit for around three weeks while his new feathers grow.

"This is a new and improved version - it's made out of a more flexible material.

"It allows him to swim easier and has velcro that can be adjusted to give him more room when he grows more feathers.

WEAR YOUR FACE ON YOUR HELMET

It's the terrified expression most rookie motorcyclists wear on their first high-speed bend.

But now you can show the world your fearful features thanks to a crash helmet personalised with your face.

The craze was started by two-wheeled legend Valentino Rossi when he wore one to win the Mugello 2008 Grand Prix.

He commented that it depicted "my expression when I bend into the San Donato curve after the straightaway in Mugello at over 300 km/h!"

Italian firms Dainese and AGV are now offering to put your face - or any other part of your body - on a helmet.

Riders simply have to send them a picture, pay Ä1500 and two and a half months later they can amaze their mates with a personalised head-turning helmet.

Riders simply have to send them a picture, pay Ä1500 and two and a half months later they can amaze their mates with a personalised head-turning helmet.

Beach babe Parish Hilton donned some suitably skimpy attire in order to launch her new hair extension hairband, called 'the Bandit', in Malibu. To help launch the product the 27-year-old heiress wore a tiny cut-out swimsuit with her name emblazoned in sparkles across it as she posed seductively for photographers. The Bandit band is being billed as the first interchangeable hair extension headband; the faux hair is 100% polyester and attaches to the band with velcro - making it possible, say the product's inventors, for anyone to 'change their look within minutes' by adding up to 22 inches of extra hair. "My goal was to bring myself and my personality into this project," Hilton said. "I have been wearing extensions for years, and there is nothing out there like this product. Every woman should have one."
