Cheerio the elephant seal is given water at the Laguna Beach Pacific Marine Mammal Center after being found stranded and malnourished
Cheer Up Cheerio The Elephant Seal
CHEER UP CHEERIO THE ELEPHANT SEAL

Weighing just 100 lbs, and with a chunk missing from her fin, this Elephant Seal looks more than a little worse for wear.

Named Cheerio, this eleven month old seal was found stranded on California's Newport Beach on Friday (2 Oct) after going without food for several weeks.

But thanks to the rescue efforts of the Laguna Beach Pacific Marine Mammal Center, Cheerio is expected to be fighting fit in just a couple of months.

Vet Richard Evans explained that because of climate change more and more fish are moving further out to sea.

While it might mean more exercise for the fish , it's bad news for young seals like Cheerio who aren't yet strong enough to swim that far.

'Elephant Seals are smart,' Mr Evans explained. 'They have a way of looking at you and knowing exactly what you're thinking, but climate change could have a devastating effect on the population if the seals keep starving.'

Poor Cheerio who is 60lbs underweight, molting and malnourished, needed special care straightaway. Together with vet, Richard, staff at the centre gave Cheerio a nice warm shower to warm her up, before gently towelling her dry.

Then she was given a special formula through a tube to help make her feel more like her old self, before finally being given a thorough medical check and a soft blanket to cuddle up to.

As soon as the vet declares her fit in a few months, Cheerio will be released back into the wild. Judging by the way she's already splashing about with a new friend in the Marine Center pool, it shouldn't be too long before she's flipping her way through the sea.

Bina Devi and her grand daughter Aaratia Kumari from a village in Haripur said "we lost everything in the flood, we don't have andthing apart from these clothes because we had no time to take any belongings as the flood water came so fast, we escaped on a bamboo bridge and paddled to here in Koshi. The army gave us emergency biscuits and water but we were not given any food for four days"
Flooding in Sunsari, Nepal - 04 Sep 2008
Around 60,000 villagers in Nepal have been displaced due to flooding caused by the Kosi river breaching its defences three weeks ago and changing its course. The conditions have also affected nearly five million people in neighbouring India. Both governments now face the task of feeding and housing the many refugees who are living in relief camps. It is thought that some people will be forced to stay in these camps for up to six months. Already disease is becoming a problem and officials have said that at least 14 people living in Nepalese aid camps have already died after becoming ill. Both India and Nepal accuse each other of being to blame for the failure of the flood walls that should have prevented the disaster.

The execution chamber at the Florida Department of Corrections 'outfitted for lethal injection' where Death Row inmate Angel Diaz, 34, was given a lethal injection but took 34 minutes to die, twice as long as normal, and had to be given a 2nd lethal dose before he was certified dead. Florida Governor Jeb Bush has halted executions in the state as a result of the flawed procedure. President George W Bush has stated that he needs to be sure that lethal injection did not constitute 'cruel and unusual punishment'. Diaz was sentenced to death for the 1979 murder of a Miami strip club manager
