Lebanese Parliament votes in General Michel Suleiman as President, Lebanon - 25 May 2008
Lebanon's parliament elected army chief Michel Suleiman as head of state on Sunday, reviving paralysed state institutions after an 18-month standoff between a U.S.-backed government and the Hezbollah-led opposition. Suleiman appealed for unity today after being sworn in following a parliament vote that many hope will turn a new page in the crisis-ridden nation.. President General Suleiman is the third military president of the Republic, where he saved the unified of the Lebanese army through three years of turmoil that have taken the country to the brink of a new civil war. Sleiman prepared to launch consultations on forming a national unity government today as he began his first full day in office. Sleiman, 59, was greeted with a 21-gun salute as he took up residence in the Baabda presidential palace
