Heavily damaged apartments block in the central street in the city of Bucha near Kyiv. Bucha was devastated during intense fighting between Ukrainian and Russian troops. Russian forces killed hundreds of civilians in the town and left many inhabitants homeless. The Ukrainian government has accused Russian forces of committing a "deliberate massacre" as they occupied and eventually retreated from Bucha, 25km northwest of Kyiv. Hundreds of bodies have been found in the days since Ukrainian forces regained control of the town. Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022, triggering the largest military attack in Europe since World War II.
