Baby Tapir Has First Swimming Lesson
Baby Tapir Has First Swimming Lesson

A day of firsts for London Zoo's newest arrival, a four-week-old Malayan tapir calf, not only did he venture outside but he also had his first swimming lesson.

Eagar to explore his outdoor paddock the baby tapir was not quite so enthusiastic when he spotted the water.

After spending a few minutes nervously testing the water with two legs, then four the yet-to-be named infant jumped in to the moat with a splash after being encouraged by mum Gertie.

Weighing an estimated 20kg, the 20 inch-tall calf will lose his distinctive spotty markings when's he around six months old, and his fur will soon resemble mum's iconic monochrome pattern.

Part of the European breeding programme for endangered species; the new arrival is a cause for celebration at the Zoo, as these animals are classed as vulnerable in the wild.

Visitors will now be able to see the youngster playing outside through the summer.

Gertie's full pregnancy, and the as-yet-unnamed calf's first hours were all captured on camera by a behind-the-scenes film crew, as part of a three-part documentary series which will be broadcast on ITV1 from Wednesday 10 July.

Tapirs have changed little over 35 million years. They use their short flexible trunk as a snorkel when swimming. The dramatic colouring helps to break up the outline of the body to provide camouflage in the shady forests. The young are striped and look different from their mother.

    Bear-Knuckle Brawling
These two bears looked like professional wrestlers as they took it in turns to pin each other to the ground.

The playful Malayan Sun Bears - named after a golden yellow patch on their chest - grappled under a tree before rolling around on the floor.

They even bit and strangled each other during their five-minute battle, with the 250lb lighter-coloured one eventually coming out on top.

Photographer Adrian Tavano, 39, caught the action at Miami Zoo in Florida.

He said: "I have never seen bears so agitated or wrestling in this manner before

"They wrestled and rolled around, using choking manoeuvres and biting each other.

"They did not use their huge sharp nails because they live together at the zoo, so it was more friendly than fierce.

"The fight lasted for about five minutes. They were an even match but the one with the lighter fur won in my opinion.

"After the match, the black one ran on top of a large rock in their enclosure and the grey one was taunting him in a funny way".
