At the age of 12, the students of Mek?ele Blind School have to wash their own clothes. A group of younger boys, who have their clothes washed by the staff, watch on as Mezgebo strains his clothes in a bucket on a Saturday morning. As the students become older they are given duties across the campus, whether laundry or helping prepare lunch and dinner. These chores evoke a sense of independence and responsibility, regardless of their blindness, in the same way children around the world have to start doing things for themselves
World Sight Day, Mek?ele Blind School, Ethiopia
Mek'ele Blind School in Ethiopia is home to around 100 children, whose companionship and passion for their education is inspiring to encounter.
Photographer Tom Pullen visited the school last year, which lies on the outskirts of the city of Mek'ele in the vast northern Tigray region of Ethiopia.

In mobility lessons the children navigate the campus grounds using canes donated by various NGOs. The activity is highly team-based, with slower children being assisted by their more confident peers. The campus, with its sprawling emptiness in the middle, is littered with large rocks, debris, and fallen branches. These lessons equip the children with a heightened sense of spatial awareness, teaching them how to walk safely and confidently

Companionship, security, understanding, tolerance and affection. These incredibly important feelings all come through the simple sense of touch that the blind children of Mek?ele rely on so much in their daily lives. Without touch, a blind person is totally isolated, and this simple act can reinforce a sense of safety, empathy, and mutual association

Document recovered from a Soviet military base abandoned after the collapse of the USSR.
Soviet propaganda poster.
Top text reads: 'In the army there cannot be the pretexts
"I do not want", "I do not wish", "I cannot". When there is
an order it is necessary both to want, and to wish, and to be able to execute it at any cost. Such is the great law of social duty, the sense of selfless service to the Homeland.'
R. Ya. Malikovski, Marshal of the Soviet Union, twice Hero
of the Soviet Union.
Diagonal text reads: THE COMPONENTS OF FIGHTING POTENTIAL: ORGANISATION AND DISCIPLINE.
EXECUTE ORDERS ACCURATELY, UNCONDITIONALLY, ON TIME.
Bottom text reads: '...I will carry out the mission until
my last breathe, until the very last drop of my blood ...
What forces help me to commit a courageous act ? Military discipline and party duty. It is correct to say: from discipline to heroism there is one step.' Captain G. Maslovski, from a letter to his son.

These haunting photographs show the remnants of the once all-powerful Soviet empire.
They are the work of Eric Lusito, who spent six years travelling throughout the former Soviet world from East Germany to Mongolia, from Poland to Kazakhstan to seek out remains of the military installations that embodied the ambition and the might of the USSR.
Describing himself as working like an archaeologist, the French photographer says his project "Traces of the Soviet Empire" is a photographic record of the land and architecture - haunted by the symbols and history of a once powerful Empire.

Pioneering surgery restores woman's sense of smell and taste after 37 years, Taverham, Norfolk, Britain - 14 Sep 2012

Woman's Sense Of Smell Restored After 37 Years
A woman has had her sense of smell and taste restored after 37 years thanks to pioneering surgery.
65-year-old June Blythe, of Taverham in Norfolk, lost the two senses when she developed chronic rhinosinusitis in 1975.
Amazingly, this didn't stop the keen cook from winning prizes for her cooking or from training and working as an aromatherapist.
Over the years June underwent three operations in an attempt to remove growths from her nasal passages, but her sense of smell and taste remained lost.
But now, after an extensive operation to clear polyps from her sinus cavities, she can smell and taste once again.
June underwent the procedure at Britain's only NHS Smell and Taste Clinic at the James Paget University Hospital.
She discovered it had been a success ten days later while making lemon and sultana scones and realising she could smell the lemon.

Ultraviolet Undersea Life
A new collection of photographs capture the beauty of underwater life.
Award-winning photographer Louise Murray has spent the majority of her years travelling the globe documenting awesome scenery and wildlife from every country she has visited.
During that time she has often dived underwater to photograph marine creatures amongst the coral reef.
Her latest collection was captured while diving in the dark waters of Tondoba Bay in the Red Sea of Egypt.
The fluorescent images occur when near an ultraviolet torch.
Highlights include a giant clam that appears dull under natural light but glows bright red under the blue hue; a pipefish hunting at night glows orange and camouflaged fish made visible by the ultraviolet torch reveal their florescent green pigment making them known to their prey.
In comparison to the muted browns, golds, pinks and blues of a coral reef during the daytime "it looks like Oxford Street at Christmas," says Louise.
The wildlife photographer uses a powerful blue light to stimulate photosensitive pigments in the marine life, which then emit fluorescent colours.
Louise explains: "Almost all these photographs were shot after dark as the sunlight masks the colours.
"The stronger the light the better the results, I have to filter my camera and eyes with a yellow mask so the true colours are revealed.
"It can be very exciting when I find a new kind of fish or crab that glows orange, yellow or red, as they are extremely rare."
