Battle of Dien Bien Phu: 50th anniversary
Vietnam-Dien Bien Phu, Eliane, E2 The Vietnamese name (A1) A giant holl of explosion, Eliane 2 is the best preserved of all the hill positions. It is the main site commemorating the battle from the Vietnamese point of view and the hill also has deep significance for the French. This is because of the nature of the battle for the hill itself. On most of the other positions t he battles consisted of ferocious Viet Minh assaults which either overwhelme d the position after horrendous losses or were repulsed with horrendous loss es. If a position was taken the French would either retake it with a counte rattack, only to lose it later to another Viet Minh attack; or the position would be given up completely. Eliane 2 was a different situation. The init ial Viet-Minh assault stalled on the top of the hill and the French, realisi ng that if the hill fell all of Dien Bien Phu would fall, determined to pay any price to hold on. As a result the battle for Eliane 2 came to resemble more the trench warfare in World War I. Vietnam in general or Dien Bien Phu in particular. Thus the French and the Vietnamese were locked in combat on Eliane 2 for 38 days. Unable to go over the top of the hill the Viets event ually went under it, digging a underground passages and filling it with 960 kg of explosive under the French shelter. When the mine was exploded and the hill finally taken on 6th May, 1954 Dien Bien Phu had only one day to live. On the foreground B/w file picture taken by Vietnamese army, Viet Minh wa r veteran Nguyen Van Khoa 77 years old holiding a picture of explosion, the men who transported and placed the 960 kg of explosive under the French she lter and build trench across hills E2 hill (A1) and A3 to separate hill E2 hill (A1) from the central sub- sector at 20:30 hours, the eplosives were d etonated .450 kg of explosives taken from unexploded boms draped by American

Vietnam-Dien Bien Phu, Huguette, The Vietnamese name (Position 206), on 22/A pr/1954 West of Muong Thanh Air port. Hugette was the next lady to be assaul ted. One attack after another against the French created huge amounts of cas ualties for them. The medical station was completely overwhelmed. Over 1,000 casualties were consigned to hastily constructed trenches, with little shel ter, light, water or food. There was none to be had. The stench of the medic al facility wafted over the compound, and not surprisingly, many walking wou nded preferred to return to their units, than endure such conditions.
