    Incredible Edibles
A cake in the shape of a suckling pig and a life-sized woman made out of bread were just two of the weird and wonderful gastronomic delights on show at a new exhibition.

They were amongst dozens of dishes served up to eager visitors at the Experimental Food Society's latest 'spectacular'.

Also getting tastebuds tingling was a dress made out of macaroons, chocolate and jelly bean portraits, a scorpion made out of chilli peppers and other incredible edibles.

Alongside this the bonkers banquet included models smothered in chocolate, a jelly St Pauls, drinks in edible glasses and horses sculpted from margarine.

The bizarre offerings came from a host of culinary creatives who are members of the Experimental Food Society.

This society was formed in order to challenge the normal perception of food.

Members include jelly mongers, cake sculptors, sugarcraft artists, mobile chocolate adventurers and "one-of-a-kind dining conceptualists".

An annual showcase enables these gastromentalists to show off their wacky fare.

Their mouthwatering offerings form part of a day-long exhibition before a select few are able to eat the lot at a grand banquet finale.

Many of the moving rocks are about the size of a loaf of bread and weigh about 25 pounds. Interns Kristopher Schwebler and Valerie Fox make notes about this one.
The Mystery of the Moving Rocks
It's a puzzling sight that the world of science has never found a conclusive answer for - rocks that seemingly move across the plains of California.

Since the 1940s researchers have documented trails left from the movement of boulders on so-called playas, or dry lakes, in Death Valley.

Amazingly, rocks as big as 700 pounds have been subject to the unexplained phenomena that sees them seemingly glide over the parched landscape - even changing direction on their path.

Some rocks travel in pairs, leaving two tracks perfectly in synch along straight stretches and around curves. Others seem undecided about direction and travel back and forth. sometimes travelling the length of several football fields.

Most cases see the trails leading to resting rocks, but in others they have disappeared.

Now a team of seventeen undergraduate and graduate students from the Lunar and Planetary Sciences Academy (LPSA) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center have begun an investigation.

They travelled to the Racetrack and nearby Bonnie Claire playas this summer to investigate how these rocks move across the nearly empty flats.

"When you see these amazing rocks and trails," says Mindy Krzykowski, an intern from the University of Alaska in Fairbanks, "you really get into coming up with your own ideas about what's going on."

For each rock and trail the students recorded GPS coordinates and took photographs. They also dug up small sensors called Hygrochrons buried three months earlier by one of the trip leaders. From these, the interns were able to capture the electronically stored temperature and humidity data.

    They marke...

Bedouin villages in the Negev Desert, Israel
Since the mid-1960s, Israel has classified these Bedouin communities in the Negev as "scattered" and put great pressure on the inhabitants to give up their traditional lifestyles as farmers. The state has offered only to move these Bedouin into one of seven deprived urban reservations created in the 1970s. Half of the 130,000 Bedouin in the Negev now live in these townships, all of which languish at the bottom of every socio-economic index. Those who refuse the state's offer of relocation live in "unrecognized" villages, meaning that provision of public services, such as water, electricity and sanitation, as well as medical clinics and schools, is illegal. In the Bedouin village of Abda, for example, the children must make a round trip of 87 miles each day to a "recognized" area with a school.

'Slumdog Millionaire' child stars Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail one year on from film's release, Mumbai, India - Feb 2010
A YEAR ON FOR THE REAL-LIFE SLUMDOG CHILDREN

With its uplifting rags-to-riches tale 'Slumdog Millionaire' proved to be the runaway hit of 2009.

The Danny Boyle directed film follows the fortunes of a young man from the dharavi slums of Mumbai who appears on the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

It went on to pick up eight Oscars, including the coveted Best Film, and has grossed over GBP 185 million worldwide.

The film also helped to shine a spotlight on the lives of people who live in India's slums, which included the production's younger stars.

Two of these child actors, 10-year-old Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail and 10-year-old Runbina Ali, quickly became the focus of intense media scrutiny.

In the film Rubina portrays the youngest version of leading lady Latika, while Azhar, as he is known, plays the youngest version of the main character's brother Salim.

Controversy erupted following the release of the film with questions raised concerning how much the youngsters had been paid.

Accusations of exploitation abound until Danny Boyle announced that he was setting up a fund for the two, which would help move them out of the slums as well as ensure they got an education.

So, just over a year since the film's UK release in January 2009, has life changed for these real-life slumdogs?

Eight months ago 10-year-old Azhar lived along with his family in the Garib Nagar slum in Bandra East.

But, as commonly happens in the slums of Mumbai, the area was demolished by the Railway authority, leaving many slum dwellers homeless.

Today, Azhar lives in a new apartment in Santa Cruz - a solidly middle class district of Mumbai - with his mother Shameen,...

Just when you thought you had seen every fashion trend, along comes BREAD shoes.

And these LOAF-ers are selling like hot cakes.

The tasty footwear comes in several styles - ranging from wholemeal to white granary bloomer.

The brainchild of Lithuanian design team R&E Praspaliauskas, the shoes are a genuine ready to wear - and ready to eat - product.

Spokesman Remigijus Praspaliauskas says: "We decided to take a product from the food market and reincarnate it.

"It is not hardened or weather-resistant, it is a natural product from real bread.

"The shoes feels very good in a dry climate, although in the wet they do tend to go mushy.

"To be honest, our shoes are good to show your friends, but not so good for using as real shoes."
