Baby Tapir Has First Swimming Lesson
Baby Tapir Has First Swimming Lesson

A day of firsts for London Zoo's newest arrival, a four-week-old Malayan tapir calf, not only did he venture outside but he also had his first swimming lesson.

Eagar to explore his outdoor paddock the baby tapir was not quite so enthusiastic when he spotted the water.

After spending a few minutes nervously testing the water with two legs, then four the yet-to-be named infant jumped in to the moat with a splash after being encouraged by mum Gertie.

Weighing an estimated 20kg, the 20 inch-tall calf will lose his distinctive spotty markings when's he around six months old, and his fur will soon resemble mum's iconic monochrome pattern.

Part of the European breeding programme for endangered species; the new arrival is a cause for celebration at the Zoo, as these animals are classed as vulnerable in the wild.

Visitors will now be able to see the youngster playing outside through the summer.

Gertie's full pregnancy, and the as-yet-unnamed calf's first hours were all captured on camera by a behind-the-scenes film crew, as part of a three-part documentary series which will be broadcast on ITV1 from Wednesday 10 July.

Tapirs have changed little over 35 million years. They use their short flexible trunk as a snorkel when swimming. The dramatic colouring helps to break up the outline of the body to provide camouflage in the shady forests. The young are striped and look different from their mother.

After a thirteen month wait 'Muffin' the Brazilian Tapir has given birth to a stripy spotty baby. Keepers at Twycross Zoo in Warwickshire have nicknamed the new arrival 'Humbug' after her distinctive furry coat. Brazilian Tapirs, also known as Lowland Tapirs, are stockier than other species of Tapir and sport a thick mane of fur down their backs, which is thought to protect them in the wild from predators who target the neck area. Humbug's dark brown coat, stripes and spots will disappear as she gets older and she will eventually become a dark grey colour like mum Muffin and father Pele.
