REPORTAGE - Hotspot in London: Camden
17/08/18. Spotlight Camden. The London Borough of Camden is a borough in north west London, and forms part of Inner London. The southern reaches of Camden form part of central London. Camden is known for its vibrant culture and street market. Mark Holdsworth, Owner of Half Hitch Gin Distillery, West Yard, Camden Market. Camden has a long history in connection with Gin. The entire site of the market once belonged to Gilby's Gin (1869-1964) where up to 800,000 gallons were produced & loaded onto trains at the site of the Roundhouse, which was once the turning circle for goods trains. Half Hitch, run by a Camden local (Mark), a former barrow boy in the market has been a fixture of the area since 2014- a multiple award-winning product using three seperate distilling techniques in it's process to produce their signature Earl Grey Tea infused Gin. Their gin is often enjoyed at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle & St. James's Palace. They also run a Gin school on site where guests are encouraged to bring along their own ingredients & flavour notes to make their own gin creations.

STUDIO - Darren Rook von der London Distillery Company
Darren Rook of the London Distillery Company. London's tradition of whisky distilling has been largely forgotten, but in the first half of the 19th century the capital was home to at least six whisky distilleries. Competition from the Scots, and a dramatic crash in whisky prices, put nearly all of them out of business, but the Lea Valley distillery hung on until 1903. Now a new generation of craft distillers are on the brink of resurrecting that tradition. In October, LDC (London Distillery Company) will release the first whisky distilled in the capital for more than 100 years: Spring-Heeled Jack, a three-year-old, 100 per cent rye whisky named after the flaming blue ghoul that was said to haunt eaters of mouldering rye bread during Victorian times.
