The famous clock of St Paul's Cathedral
Designed by the barrister-peer Lord Grimthorpe whose hobby was horology. The massive mechanism of the cathedral clock was built in 1893 , but the bells are much older, dating from the time when Sir Christopher Wren raised the new St Paul's - his own monument - after the Grreat Fire of London . Winding the clock is a strenuous job , done by hand-winch and taking an hour every day. Winding times are varied to ensure even wear throughout the machinery. These pictures were taken behind the three 19 ft dials with 9ft 6in minute hands and 5ft 6ins hour hands which give City people the right time at any time and show the huge size of St Paul's cathedrsal clock.
