Savoury Doritos snacks are boldly going where no Dorito has gone before — into space.
Special packs of the tortilla chips will be aboard a forthcoming space mission by Elon Musk’s Space X programme.
The mission, called Polaris Dawn, will feature the first space walk by private citizens.
But the four astronauts aboard will get to enjoy Doritos as part of a $500,000 USD sponsorship deal between Doritos maker PepsiCo and SpaceX to benefit charity.
An innovative oil-based coating was developed to keep the chips from crumbling causing a zero gravity mess.
The coating is also said to help keep the zesty Cool Ranch flavour in space.
Finally the chips come in mini versions to be eaten in one bite, again to save potential crumbs from floating around the Space X module.
Called Cool Ranch Zero Gravity chips, they are packaged in space-approved tins for flight with the canister, enhanced with glow-in-the-dark features to commemorate the mission.
Doritos is making a $500,000 USD donation to the USA’s St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
The charity is leading the way in treating and finding cures for childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
