    Protests against ICE tactics
August 8, 2025 – New York, New York, United States: Volunteers and passerby gather around the Liberty City table initiative outside 26 Federal Plaza, where activists provide informational pamphlets and guidance on immigration rights. ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) made at least 12 arrests on or near courthouse grounds since January 2025. Arrests by ICE during President Trump's second term topped 100,000 this week, as federal agents intensified efforts to detain unauthorized immigrants in courthouses, worksites and communities across the U.S. As o the first week of June 2025, ICE recorded more than 2,000 arrests each day, a dramatic increase from the daily average of 660 arrests reported by the agency during Mr. Trump's first 100 days in office. ICE has resorted to more aggressive — and controversial — tactics that have triggered outrage and even confrontations in some communities. Those efforts include arrests of migrants and asylum-seekers showing up to court hearings or check-in appointments that the government instructed them to attend. Immigration lawyers have strongly denounced those arrests, saying they deter migrants from complying with the legal process. Immigration roundups at some worksites have also been reported recently. 40th Annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering
February 1, 2025 - Elko, Nevada, United States: A young volunteer named Serafina mans the entrance to the G Three Bar Theater at the Western Folklife Center on Saturday night. Scenes from the 40th Annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering (formerly: Elko Cowboy Poetry Gathering), is an annual gathering celebrating cowboy poetry produced by the Western Folklife Center, that takes place in Elko, Nevada. Organized by a team of folklorists and local cowboy poets including Hal Cannon and Waddie Mitchell, the Gathering started in 1985 as a place where Western ranchers and cowboys could gather to share poems about their lives working cattle. From the beginning, it was clear these men and women had found their tribe, an artistic community that few knew existed. Three decades later, the tribe is now a nation of Western poets, musicians, artisans and storytellers, telling stories of hard work, heartbreak, hilarity, and what it means to make your way in the rangeland West. The "Elko Gathering" was renamed the "National Cowboy Poetry Gathering" thanks to an act of Congress in 1980. (Jessica Brandi Lifland / Polaris) (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS)

'Heritage is the razzmatazz': Great Central Railway plans to revive Victorian train route
More than half a century after it was split by the 'Beeching axe', funds are being raised to reconnect Loughborough to Leicester line with Nottingham.

Great Central Railway closed the line in 1969. More than 50 years later, work is under way to reunify two parts of the last Victorian mainline railway to be built, split by the Beeching cuts of the 1960s.

Planning permission is being sought and funds are being raised to draw up engineering plans to reconnect the Loughborough to Leicester line with another section running north to Nottingham.

The “Drive A Train Experience” is run by the Great Central Railway in Loughborough. The heritage railway has been run by volunteers since 1969 after its closure by British Railways and is now a visitor attraction.
