New election promise builds on record levels of investment in the Met Police from City Hall after 'decade of Tory neglect'
Sadiq joined by Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper MP to outline how future Labour government and Mayor will restore neighbourhood policing in the capital.
Sadiq Khan today unveiled a major new election pledge to put around 1,300 additional neighbourhood police officers, PCSOs and special constables on the streets of London.
Labour's Mayor declared: "After more than a decade of Tory neglect, a return to proper neighbourhood policing will be at the heart of my third term if I am re-elected."
He made the pledge alongside Shadow Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, while out on patrol with officers from the Met police in [WANDSWORTH].
The additional officers would considerably increase the Met’s ability to bear down on crime and would provide a significant boost to neighbourhood policing - a key recommendation in Baroness Casey’s landmark review into the Met Police.
They would be at the forefront of tackling crime in the community, working on key issues such as targeting the highest-harm offenders of violence against women and girls.
Nationally, as part of Labour’s Community Policing Guarantee, police officers will be put back in on the streets of town centres and neighbourhoods across the country, with increased patrols and 13,000 more neighbourhood police & PCSOs overall.
The Mayoral election on 2nd May will be a close two-horse race between Sadiq and his hard-r
