NEWS - Sitzstreik gegen US Army: Okinawa protestiert gegen Stützpunktbau
July 23, 2016 - Tokyo, Japan: A group of some 800 activists protested in Shinjuku district to air their frustrations over today's announcement by the US Armed Forces to resume construction of a controversial US Marine Corps air base in Henoko town on the northern end of Okinawa. This base will be a replacement for the USMC Air Station Futenma on the southern end of the island, a densely populated area. These activists claim that relocating the Futenma base to Henoko will altar the ecosystem of the Yanbaru forest where protected birds habituate, as well as cause irreversible harm to coral reefs where the endangered dudong lives, a type of Okinawan manatee. In addition to environment concerns, Okinawa residents are angered by the recent murder of an Okinawan women by an American contracted base employee and former military, as well as use of Offsprey aircraft which have crashed in urban Okinawa. This all equals a call for the revision of the US Japan Armed Forces Agreement concerning all US military in Okinawa. (Torin Boyd/Polaris). (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS) *** Local Caption *** 05554961
