  • Pulling the strings: meet the people who brought puppets to life. Puppets were once ubiquitous on TV, but over the past two decades they’ve all but vanished. What happened to them – and to the humans who used to control them?

    CHINA-SHANXI-PUPPETRY HERITAGE (CN)
(110314) -- XIAOYI, March 14, 2011 (Xinhua) -- Puppetry successor Wu Xing shows a puppet in Xiaoyi City, north China's Shanxi Province, March 13, 2011. As one of China's intangible heritages, the Xiaoyi Puppetry or Puppet Show has been dying in recent years as fewer people come to see the show and few young people would like to settle down to learn the skill amid the fast-pace living society. "Puppetry was quite popular among the local people 40 years ago and our performing schedule at that time was almost full although there were over 40 such troupes here." said Wu Xing, the 61-year-old artist who learned puppetry in his teens. Seeing only two or three puppetry successors soldier on, Wu Xing felt sad. Though he himself once turned into other business for a livelihood, he finally chose to continue his performing career. A glimpse of hope emerges in 2010, however, as a local enterprise sponsored to establish a company specially for spreading Xiaoyi cultural heritage. Wu Xing teaches 15 young students to learn the puppetry now with a hope to reserve the dying art. (Xinhua/Zhan Yan) (lfj)
