'Romantic, isn’t it?' Cornish pub cuts energy costs with candlelight nights
The Masons Arms in Camelford is turning out the lights on Mondays after a sharp rise in its electricity bill.
In the Masons Arms, Camelford, where soaring electricity bills have prompted the landlady and the landlord, Katy Chawner-Woods and Alan Woods, to turn the lights off and illuminate the place with hundreds of candles.
Chawner-Woods says the idea came after she opened the August electricity bill - £2,574, compared with £1,172 for the same time last year.
So they headed to Ikea, filled their car up with candles and launched candlelight Mondays.

‘I’m petrified’: Leeds faces up to winter under cost of living crisis
In Harehills, one of the most deprived areas of the UK, people already queue for three hours before the food bank opens.
There are very few places in the UK these days where £2 would get you a cheese toastie. But at Meeting Point Cafe, in the diverse inner-city ward of Harehills in north Leeds, the prices are based on what customers can afford - which, in many cases, is not very much.
As one of the most deprived places in the UK, the cost of living crisis is particularly acute in Harehills, said Salma Arif, a Labour councillor here.

Shoppers on Oxford Street London as the cost of living crisis continues.
01/09/2022. London, UK.
Large crowds of shoppers on Regent Street, London despite the economic downturn as households brace for a huge spike in energy prices this Autumn. Last week Ofgem announce that the typical household energy bill will rise by 80% to £3,549 from next month (October). Breweries have also written to Downing Street asking for more help with soaring fuel costs which are set to reach thousands of pounds a year, forcing many pubs, restaurants and cafes to close as the cost of living crisis continues.

The London ‘people’s pantry’ where a week’s shop costs £3.50
A stoneÕs throw from well-to-do KingÕs Cross lies a community hub bringing people together through food.
The Pantry in north London is buzzing. Customers browse the wooden crates for celeriac and butternut squash; one picks up a tin of organic tomatoes and pops it in her basket. The smell of rich mushroom soup wafts through the air.
A new social enterprise, the Pantry is stocked with surplus food. Once a week, customers pay £3.50, and take close to a weekÕs worth of shopping that may have a value of between £15 and £20. Served by volunteers from the Priory Green estate, shoppers stick around, have a cup of tea or some warming soup, and chat to their fellow residents.
It is not, the members stress, a food bank.

Shoppers on Oxford Street London as the cost of living crisis continues.
01/09/2022. London, UK.
A homeless person sits outside a disused shop on Oxford Street, London as households brace for a huge spike in energy prices this Autumn.
