A snorkeler in Jellyfish Lake, Palau, Micronesia encounters Mastigias Jellyfish, said to be "stingless."

The Pacific island nation of Palau has become home to the sixth largest marine sanctuary in the world.

The Micronesian reserve, now the largest in the Pacific, will permit no fishing or mining. Palau also established the world's first shark sanctuary in 2009.

The tiny island nation has set aside 500,000 square kilometres -- 80 percent -- of its maritime territory, for full protection. That's the highest percentage of an exclusive economic zone devoted to marine conservation by any country in the world. (FOTO: DUKAS/PHOTOSHOT)

Six men were rescued from the experimental " floating isalnd " of underwater explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau after fire broke out in the " vertical submarine " today .
Earlier , planes which flew over the island - situated between Nice and Corsica - had reported signs of possible fire , after the island had not replied to radio messages since last Friday night .
The " island " is in effect , a giant buoy , or , as Cousteau described it , a " vertical submarine " , it is comprised of a steel cylinder 220 ft long and about 10 feet diameter , capped by a platform 30 ft long by 15 ft . The 225 ton apparatus is anchored by sturdy nylon cables attached to a six ton mass of iron. All but about 20 feet of the cylinder is submerged .

RESCUE SQUADS SEARCH MOORLAND SHAFTS FOR MISSING WOMAN

Rescue workers are searching disused mine shafts on the lonely Burbage Moor, Derbyshire, in the hunt for Mrs.Edith Mariott, aged about forty, of Level Lane, Burbage, who disappeared and is believed to have fallen down an abandoned pit, while out for a walk with a friend.
One rescue worker, Mr Albert Bonser , aged 55 rescue station superintendent from Chesterfield, was lowered into the 420-feet deep Goyt Colliery shaft, abandoned fifty years ago owing to gas. He was brought to the surface, soaked to the skin, to report no trace of the woman.
Other shafts will be searched tomorrow. Mrs Mariott, mother of two children, had been ill for some time.

PICTURE SHOWS:- Mr. Albert Bonser tests his breathing apparatus before beginning his descent. He wears a small motor-horn with which he signals to workers above ground.

    Frogman new style.
68 years old former Paris barrister Monsieur Daniel P Causteau flaps is way down to the beach at Torquay, Devon, to demonstrate for the first time in Britain, a new lightweight diving outfit, the invention of his son, Lt Cmdr M Jacques Yves Cousteau. The suit, which comprises wet feet, a large mask and a container of compressed air strapped on the back and attached by a pipe to the mouth, enables the diver to remain under water for long periods with complete freedom of movement. In the Torquay demonstration father Cousteau stayed under for a modest nine minutes, but is inventor son, a state-based the warm waters of the Mediterranean for much longer periods, and is reached a depth of 257 feet without ill effect. Pressure of the sea is countered by an automatic air pressure control. It is understood that the Admiralty and the French Ministry of Marie have an interested eye on the Cousteau invention.
